Guggul is a resinous substance that is obtained from the tree. It is a gum resin emitted by plants during extreme heat. This plant grows as a small tree and reaches 4-5 feet in height. Its branches are prickly. While the fresh guggul is soft and sticky, it becomes a solid substance when dried. It is hot and bitter. To obtain gum, a circular cut is made in the main stem of its plant. Through these cuts, the aromatic liquid rapidly solidifies to a golden brown or reddish-brown colour. The resin obtained is Guggul which is used for medicinal purposes. It contains many components like vitamins, antioxidants, and chromium, which help cure many diseases, especially diseases like gas, bloating, pain, stones, piles, chronic cough, increase in sexual power, asthma, joint pain, inflammation of lungs, etc.

Benefits of Guggul

Effective in diabetes-

Guggul is very beneficial for diabetic patients. It works by regulating the production of insulin and controls blood sugar and protects the pancreas due to which the production of insulin is correct. Therefore, diabetic patients must take a spoonful of it with lukewarm water in the morning and evening.

Regulates cholesterol-

Guggul has blood purifying and rejuvenating properties. It helps in removing toxins from the body and helps in curing skin diseases caused due to accumulation of toxins. Guggul improves the body's immune system and regulates lipid levels. It is also beneficial in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Guggul Benefits for Weight Loss-

Obesity is the main cause of heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, PCOS and other metabolic disorders. Guggul is specially used for weight loss, that is why its consumption is considered good for people who want to lose weight.

Useful for skin-

Guggul is used to treat ulcers and wounds. It is mixed with coconut oil and used on the affected skin area.

Remove acidity-

Mix 1 teaspoon of guggul powder in a cup of water and keep it. Filter it after about an hour. Consuming this mixture after meals ends acidity.

Relief in joint pain-

Consuming guggul is beneficial if there is any problem related to bones in the body. Taking a spoonful of its powder with lukewarm water in the morning and evening helps in swelling, post-injury pain and healing of broken bones.

Remove swelling-

Guggul has anti-inflammatory properties which help in relieving pain and inflammation. Consuming its powder also helps a lot in strengthening the nervous system of the body.

Effective in blisters-

In case of mouth ulcers, keep guggul in the mouth or dissolve it in warm water and gargle with it 3 to 4 times a day. By doing this, sores, blisters and burns inside the mouth are cured.

Will get rid of baldness-

People who are troubled by baldness should apply Guggul's vinegar regularly in the morning and evening on the head where there is no hair. Apply it daily till the hair growth starts.

Beneficial in stomach disease-

If someone has a complaint of constipation, then the powder of guggul is beneficial for him. For this, mix 5 grams of Triphala powder in about 5 grams of guggul and take it with lukewarm water at night. This will also remove chronic constipation.

Side effects of Guggul

  • Guggulu stimulates blood flow during menstruation and reduces the size of the uterus, hence its use during pregnancy should be avoided.
  • Guggul affects the function of the thyroid, therefore use with caution in an underactive or overactive thyroid.
  • Consuming it in excess can be harmful to the liver. Therefore, guggul should be used with caution in liver disease or inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Breastfeeding women should also talk to their doctor before consuming it.

Where is Guggul found and grown?

In dry and rocky parts of India, it is mainly found in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Assam and Uttar Pradesh.
