Baldness: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Baldness, also known as alopecia or hair loss, refers to an excessive loss of hair that usually affects the scalp. It is considered normal to shed about 50 to 100 hair strands daily with new growth replacing these hairs. However, if the lost hairs are not renewed or come back thinner than the one that was shed, it eventually leads to baldness.

Although both men and women experience hair loss, it is not as common in women as in men and appears differently.

Patterns of Baldness

There exist two baldness patterns in humans- Male pattern baldness and Female pattern baldness.

  • Men with male pattern baldness tend to develop a receding hairline and bald spots. In women, the hair becomes thinner rather than fall out and the resulting baldness may be less severe than in men.
  • In the early stage of male pattern baldness, hair loss is noticed at the front of the head (temple) and gradually recedes to the back where the scalp in the upper and crown areas become more visible. In female pattern baldness, women lose hair from all over their head, starting at the part line. Hair at the temple may also recede.
  • Female pattern and male pattern baldness usually occurs in people in their 40s and beyond.

Causes of Baldness

Baldness is usually related to one or more of the following factors-

Genetics-

Genetics play a significant role in developing baldness. Men and women can inherit the gene from parent baldness. You are more prone to developing baldness if your father, mother or other close relatives have experienced hair loss.

Illness-

Baldness can develop after a significant illness. The stress from illness or surgery may prompt the body to temporarily cease such tasks as hair production. Some other specific conditions such as syphilis, iron deficiency, thyroid disorder or some certain type of cancer can trigger hair loss.

Medications and supplements-

Hair loss can result from the use of certain medications, such as those used for treating cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis and heart problems.

Autoimmune disease-

A rare autoimmune disease known as alopecia areata that causes the immune system to attack the hair follicle can lead to hair loss.

Hormonal changes-

Changes in the level of certain hormones in men and women can lead to hair loss. Androgen is a hormone that plays a role in hair loss. A tumor of the pituitary gland that secretes androgen may play a role in hair loss.

Menopause-

In women, female pattern baldness becomes more common after menopause. This occurs because estrogen in the body decreases.

Risk factors of Baldness

Risk factors include-

  • Family history of baldness from your mother or father.
  • Age.
  • Significant weight loss.
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes and lupus.
  • Stress.
  • Poor nutrition.

Symptoms of Baldness

The most common symptoms of baldness in men are-

  • Bald patch on top of the scalp.
  • Receding hairline from the front.
  • Partial baldness.

The most common symptoms of baldness in women are-

  • Excessive loss of hair.
  • Overall thinning of hair.
  • Reduction in the density of hair.

Diagnosis for Baldness

Your doctor will perform a physical exam on your scalp to see the pattern of hair loss and review your medical and family history. The doctor may also carry out certain tests such as-

  • Blood test to uncover underlying medical conditions that may be related to your hair loss.
  • Scalp biopsy where few hairs are plucked from your scalp to examine the hair root. This helps to determine whether hair loss is due to certain infection.
  • Pull test, your doctor pulls multiple hairs to see how many hairs come out. The doctor can then determine the stage of the shedding process.

How to treat Baldness?

Early diagnosis is encouraged as it can get you on a treatment plan and minimize future loss. Treatments are available and may depend on the cause of your baldness.

If your baldness is caused by an underlying medical condition, treatment for such a condition may be of significant importance. If the excessive hair loss is caused by a certain medication that you are using, your doctor may ask you to stop using such medication for a while.

1. If hair loss is a result of iron deficiency, your doctor may prescribe an iron supplement.

2. If it is as a result of a gene that was passed from your parents (genetics), medications are available such as-

  • Minoxidil (to treat pattern baldness in men and women).
  • Finasteride and dutasteride (to treat hair loss in men). This is an oral medication.
  • Spironolactone is one of the oral medications used to treat female pattern baldness.
Laser therapy-

Laser comb and helmet which works by emitting low levels of laser light to help stimulate hair regrowth are used. This treatment is FDA approved.

Leech therapy-

Ayurveda uses alternative medical therapy, including the use of leeches to suck blood from the scalp to increase circulation. It helps cover bald spots with fresh hair growth.

Acupuncture-

Acupuncture, a Chinese medical practice, involves activating trigger points that balances the body fluids and energies, this resolves the baldness problem by promoting hair growth. Some people may choose a hair transplant. During a hair transplant, hair is removed from an area with healthy hair growth and a transplant is made to the spot where the hair is missing. A surgical procedure to treat baldness is expensive with possible risks of bleeding and scarring.

Home Remedies for Baldness

Castor oil-

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that can help reduce dandruff and hair loss. Frequent massage with warm castor oil 20 minutes before bath stimulates hair roots and increases blood circulation in the scalp.

Coconut oil-

Coconut oil contains nourishing fats and alpha-tocopherol that rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp. Massaging with warm coconut oil increases blood circulation to the hair and stimulates hair growth.

Peppermint oil-

This essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which is good for thick and long hair.

Jojoba oil-

Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. This can help in nourishing hair and promoting hair growth. Massaging this oil onto the scalp for a few minutes is effective for boosting hair growth.

Tea tree oil-

Extreme dandruff and scalp infections can sometimes lead to baldness. In such cases, tea tree oil works well as it is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. For this, dilute the essential oil by mixing it with a carrier oil. Apply this on the scalp and leave it for at least an hour then rinse using a mild shampoo.

Avoid fast food to keep your hair healthy. Drinking enough water and staying hydrated can help prevent hair loss. Include adequate portions of the foods listed below in your regular diet-

  • Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and guavas.
  • Lean meats like chicken and fish (to get enough protein to the hair follicles).
  • Foods that contain vitamin A and beta-carotene, such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cantaloupe, chayote and apricots.
  • Foods high in silica such as strawberries, red peppers, barley, oats, rice and beans.
  • Milk, eggs and yogurt.

When to see a doctor?

If you are experiencing unusual hair loss, it is best to consult your doctor, especially if you notice a rash or pain on the scalp.

Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies for Head lice

Lice are small and wingless parasitic insects that suck blood from the scalp, living between the hairs. Head lice are a common problem which is especially found in school children of 4-11 years. It is not harmful but can stay in the hair for a long time. If left untreated, then it becomes very difficult to deal with them. Lice are contagious and spread rapidly from one to another. Sometimes it is very difficult to get rid of them but lice are not dangerous. Itching and infection can occur due to their bite or sucking blood on the skin of children's scalp but it does not cause any disease.

Lice parasites are born in the human body. It is usually found only in the hair. Their body is long and wingless and has an antenna with four parts. The head is small and the mouth is piercing. It pierces the skin with its mouth and drinks blood. When it drinks blood, it starts itching. While piercing the body, it releases non-conscious matter (sensation void) due to which there is no pain when it bites. This mostly happens due to the lack of cleanliness in people with long hair. The lifespan of an adult louse is 30 days on the nutritious skin. The female louse lays about 90 eggs and within 7-10 days more lice hatch from the eggs and in the next 10 days, it turns into an adult louse. Similarly, this process continues leading to the multiplication of lice.

Symptoms of Head lice

Itchy head-

Itching of the scalp is considered a common symptom of lice. However, only itching in the head is not seen to be associated with this problem. Apart from this, itching in the neck and ears is also a common symptom. The reaction of the scalp with the saliva of the lice causes allergic reactions and itching. When a person gets the infection, they may not experience itching for the first two to six weeks. Sometimes it takes a few weeks for the lice to reach the scalp and cause itching.

Having louse eggs in the hair-

Lice eggs get stuck in sticky hair. It is very difficult to see new louse eggs because it's too small. These eggs are found around the ears and in the hairline of the neck. It is easy to see the empty lice eggs because they are light in colour and are easily visible on the scalp.

Problems caused by running lice-

People often feel a lot of trouble due to their walking or crawling on the hair or head.

Causes of Hair lice

Lice are spread through direct contact. It does not come by jumping or flying from one head to another. Due to direct or indirect contact with the head of the person suffering from the problem of lice, it gets in the head. Lice survive for short periods in clothing, hats and hairbrushes but the risk of infection from objects is high. The problem of lice is seen more in girls than in boys and in women than in men. Lice spread in a person's hair in many ways. The following are the causes of hair lice-

  • Coming into contact with someone who has already had lice (e.g personal contact is common at school or sporting activities, at home or while camping).
  • Wearing clothing of a person with lice such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms or hair ribbons.
  • Using the comb, brush or towel of a person with lice.
  • Using the same bedding, sofa, pillow, carpet, or coming into contact with lice animals.
  • Young children also develop this problem when they come into contact with their schoolmates (aged 3-11 years) or a family member.
  • The elders of a house where there are children with lice also remain at risk of getting lice.

Home remedies to get rid of Head lice

Combing louse in wet hair-

On wet hair, lice can be easily removed by moving the hair from top to bottom with a low wide-toothed comb. The hair should be completely wet in this process, comb the entire hair at least twice. Repeat this method every two or three days. By doing this, all the head lice will be removed within about two weeks.

Teatree oil and fennel oil are beneficial in removing louse-

Lice are also destroyed by the use of oils made from natural plants, for example, tea tree oil or fennel oil. Apply it to the hair and leave it for 7-8 hours and wash and comb the hair.

Neem is beneficial in removing louse-

Make a paste of neem leaves and apply it to the hair and wash it after drying. This kills the lice.

Lemon and ginger paste is effective in removing lice-

Mix one teaspoon of ginger paste in two teaspoons of lemon juice and leave it on your scalp for 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water when it dries. Doing this process twice a week proves to be effective.

Coconut oil and apple cider vinegar are effective in removing lice-

Mix coconut oil and apple cider vinegar and apply it to the hair. Wash and comb the hair after a few hours. Coconut oil is good for hair but as a remedy to kill lice, adding apple vinegar to this oil and applying it on the hair removes the lice easily.

Garlic and lemon paste beneficial in removing louse-

Apply lemon juice mixed with garlic paste on the hair and wash the hair after an hour. By doing this, the louse easily gets killed because garlic is used as a medicine for lice.

Treatment for Head lice

  • Medicines applied to the scalp are used to remove or eliminate head lice. The most common ways to treat lice are by using medicated creams, lotions or shampoos due to which the lice easily die.
  • Most lice eggs live on your clothes. Therefore, to remove them, the clothes worn should be cleaned by soaking them in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. This method kills the big lice and also kills their eggs. Lice in the body are able to live only in the place where they get nutrition. At the same time, it goes away by cleaning the body and washing clothes regularly.
  • Children going to school or daycare centres should be explained not to make head to head contact with each other so that the yoke does not spread from one to the other.
  • Itching may persist even after all the head lice are gone. It is an allergic reaction to their bite. The use of cortisone cream or calamine lotion is recommended to overcome this.

When to go to the doctor?

There is no need to visit a doctor if there are lice, but personal hygiene should be taken care of. Along with this, home remedies, medicated oils, shampoos and lifestyle changes can get rid of lice.
