Porphyria: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Porphyria: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Porphyria is a group of disorders characterized by the buildup of porphyrin in the body, negatively affecting the skin and nervous system. Porphyrins are the main precursors of heme (an iron-containing pigment that is vital for the body organs) which the body requires to make heme.

Porphyria slows down the production of heme. Heme makes up part of the hemoglobin in the blood which carries oxygen to body tissues and gives color to the red blood cells. It is produced in the liver and bone marrow. The production of heme involves 8 different enzymes.

In porphyria, people are unable to fully convert porphyrin to heme because the body does not have enough of some of these enzymes. This results in the buildup of porphyrin in tissues and blood, causing damage to nerve cells and Cutaneous Porphyria primarily affecting the skin with typically no damage to nerve cells.

The specific names of some of the subsets of porphyria are

  • AminoLevulinic Acid Dehydratase-deficiency Porphyria (ALADP).
  • Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP).
  • Hereditary Coproporphyria (HCP).
  • Porphyria Cutanea tarda (PCT).
  • Harderoporphyria.
  • Erythropoietic Protoporphyria (EPP).

The most common form of acute porphyria is Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP) while the most common form of cutaneous porphyria is Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT).

Symptoms of Porphyria

Symptoms of Acute Porphyria include

  • Chest pain.
  • Severe abdominal pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Constipation or diarrhea.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Difficulty in urinating.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Seizures.
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Numbness.
  • Behavioral changes such as anxiety.
  • Hallucination.

Symptoms of cutaneous porphyria may result from sun exposure and may include

  • Sudden painful skin redness and swelling.
  • Burning pain caused by sensitivity to the sun and sometimes artificial light.
  • Itching.
  • Excessive hair growth in affected areas.
  • Red or brown urine.
  • Blisters on the hands, arms and face.
  • Fragile thin skin with changes in skin color.

Causes of Porphyria

Porphyria may be inherited or acquired. Most forms of porphyria are inherited.

In inherited form, the defective gene may be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern (from one parent) or an autosomal recessive pattern (from both parents).

The acquired form may be triggered by

  • Excessive alcohol use.
  • Smoking.
  • Estrogen medication.
  • Liver disease.

When exposed to triggers, the body’s demand for heme production increases and may set in motion a process that causes the buildup of porphyrins.

Risk factors for Porphyria

Risk factors for porphyria include

  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Family history of porphyria.
  • Northern European ancestry.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Steroid hormones.
  • Viral infection.

Diagnosis of Porphyria

To make a diagnosis, the doctor will order blood urine or stool samples. Porphyria may be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms associated with the condition are similar to those of other diseases.

In some cases, the doctor may use imaging tests such as CT scan or X rays to make a diagnosis. Early diagnosis is important for handling the condition and avoiding any complications.

Treatment for Porphyria

No cure exists for the condition, but it is possible to manage symptoms. Effective management depends on the type you have.

For acute porphyria, treatment options include

  • Prescription or over-the-counter drugs for pain, nausea and vomiting.
  • Oral or intravenous injection of glucose.
  • Injection of hemin to reduce the production of porphyrin.

For cutaneous porphyria, treatment options include

  • Removal of blood to reduce the levels of iron.
  • Medications that reduce sun sensitivity.
  • Medications that absorb excess porphyrins.

To reduce the risk of an attack, it is important to understand certain environmental triggers. Triggers may vary from person to person and it may take time before you discover your triggers for an attack. Triggers may include

  • Stress.
  • Certain medications or antibiotics.
  • Use of recreational drugs.
  • Dieting or fasting.
  • Heavy consumption of alcohol.
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight.
  • Menstrual hormones.
  • Excess iron levels.
  • Infections or other illnesses.

Precautions to be taken in Porphyria

There is no cure for this disease, but eliminating triggers can prevent seizures and life-threatening conditions.

  • Drugs, alcohol and smoking should be avoided.
  • Staying out of sunlight is necessary in case of cutaneous porphyria.
  • Wear long sleeves, hats, coats, and other protective clothing to prevent the sunlight.
  • Diet plays an important role in preventing porphyria. Reducing consumption which increases blood pressure and following a diet recommended by a nutritionist will help in maintaining good health.

When to see a doctor?

Porphyria is a rare disease. Therefore, communicating with your doctor can help you make a decision about the treatment of the condition. Since this condition is triggered by many external factors, your doctor will advise you to take certain precautions to prevent attacks.

Patients suffering from porphyria should consult a medical team for a cure. This medical team includes

  • Genetic Counselor To find out the origin and possibility of passing this mutated gene on to your offspring and future generations.
  • HematologistTo diagnose and treat blood-related symptoms.
  • DermatologistFor the treatment of skin diseases.
  • HepatologistTreats liver diseases.
  • NeurologistTo control neurological symptoms.

Monkeypox- A Rare Viral Disease

Monkeypox- A Rare Viral Disease

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease similar to smallpox in humans. It was discovered in 1958. Humans were first exposed to monkeypox in 1970. The disease is common in the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. Monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the family Poxviridae. Variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus are the other significant members of the Orthopoxvirus genus.

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) and is considered a mild infection with symptoms such as fever, headache and rashes. People may be infected with monkeypox through contact with infected animals, especially sick or dead animals.

It can also be passed from person to person, but this is rare. When you come into contact with viral particles from an infected person, it is called human-to-human transmission. Coughing, sneezing, and airborne droplets can spread the infection.

Symptoms of Monkeypox

Symptoms of monkeypox are similar but milder than smallpox. Symptoms appear in 2 stages and usually last 2 to 4 weeks.

In stage 1, the following symptoms may occur

  • Fever.
  • Chills.
  • Swollen lymph nodes.
  • Headache.
  • Muscle ache.
  • Joint pain.
  • Back pain.
  • Fatigue.

In stage 2, a rash develops within 1 to 3 days (sometimes longer) of the onset of fever. The rash often starts on the face or limbs, but can also affect other parts of the body such as the arms, feet, mouth, and genitals.

The rash usually lasts between 14 and 28 days and goes through various stages before eventually forming a scab which then disappears.

Prevention for Monkeypox

The rash usually lasts between 14 and 28 days and goes through various stages before eventually forming a scab which then disappears.

There are many steps to prevent monkeypox virus

  • Avoid direct contact with animals that can transmit the virus. This includes sick or dead animals in areas where monkeypox is common.
  • Avoid contact with materials that have been in contact with sick animals.
  • Isolate infected people from others who may be at risk.
  • Practice hand hygiene after contact with infected people or animals. For example, washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when treating infected patients.
  • In addition, the smallpox vaccine is about 85 percent effective in preventing monkeypox.

How to diagnose Monkeypox?

  • A swab of skin or lesion secretions can easily be taken to identify monkeypox virus. Samples may be stored in a cool, dark place if refrigerated storage is not available.
  • Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy are technical means of confirming the diagnosis. Quantitative PCR technique has proven reliable in detecting viruses. However, this technique is not available in rural Africa, where the disease occurs, and is therefore not very helpful in diagnosing monkeypox.
  • A new technique called Tetracore Orthopox Biothreat Alert, offers the possibility to identify the virus. This is useful in infectious areas as it doesn't require much expertise. Severe temperature conditions are not required to carry out the test.

Treatment for Monkeypox

There is no cure for monkeypox virus infection in humans. There are currently 3 antiviral compounds to treat monkeypox

  • ST-246It prevents viruses from being released from cells and has been shown to be effective in controlling infection with some orthopox viruses. It is not approved to treat monkeypox infection but is sometimes used to treat other orthopoxviruses infections.
  • CidofovirIt blocks enzymes involved in viral multiplication. However, this drug is toxic to the kidneys. It is tentatively approved for the treatment of other orthopox viral infections.
  • CMX-001It is a cidofovir compound which is not toxic to the kidneys. It has been shown to be effective in controlling the multiplication of various orthopoxviruses. It's still in development. The vaccine against the smallpox virus used for smallpox is also used as a vaccination tool. However, live virus is a cause for concern because complications can develop in some people with compromised immune systems. Inactivated vaccine viruses are also used, but these are not as effective as some of the compounds mentioned. Vaccinate a person in advance if they are known to work in an area prone to monkeypox infection. After contact with an infected person, vaccination is recommended within 4 to 14 days of exposure.

When to see a doctor?

If you are experiencing symptoms of monkeypox, and especially if you develop a rash with fever and swollen lymph nodes, you should isolate yourself from others and seek medical attention.

What is Blood Infection (Sepsis)? Know its Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

Blood infection is also known as sepsis or septicemia. It is a disease caused by infection. This condition occurs when chemicals that dissolve in the blood to fight infection cause inflammation or irritation in the body due to which many changes occur in the body. As a result, many organs in the body get damaged or their functionality gets interrupted. In such a situation, people should contact the doctor immediately because ignoring it can cause rapid spread of infection in the body due to which it takes the form of septic shock. Many parts of the body stop working and blood pressure starts decreasing suddenly. This may lead to the death of a person. The initial symptoms can be cured by some home remedies or by changing daily routine.

Symptoms and Stages of Blood Infection Sepsis

There is no single symptom of sepsis. It consists of a combination of symptoms. On the basis of these symptoms, the stage of blood infection is divided into three parts in which the first is the initial condition of sepsis, the second is the severe sepsis and the last is the condition of septic shock. Let's talk about its stages and symptoms which are as follows-

Early Blood Infection(Sepsis)

To test or diagnose sepsis, the following symptoms must be noted in the patient-

  • Breathing rapidly.
  • Likely or confirmed infection.
  • Change in body temperature.
  • Rapid heartbeat i.e more than 90 beats per minute.

Symptoms of Severe Sepsis

In the severe stage of sepsis, the patient experiences many symptoms but some of them are as follows-

  • Difficulty in breathing.
  • Rapid drop in platelet count.
  • Feeling of loss of urine.
  • Change in the mental state of the person.
  • Abnormally pumping by the heart.
  • Unbearable pain in the stomach.

Symptoms of Septic Shock

Symptoms of septic shock are similar to those of severe sepsis but there are fluctuations in blood pressure. In this condition, many parts of the body stop working and blood pressure starts decreasing suddenly due to which the person may even die. Therefore, doctors resort to fluids to normalize the patient's blood pressure.

Causes of Blood Infection Sepsis

There are many reasons behind blood infection but the main reason for this is a malfunction in the immune system (weakening of immunity). Since the immune system works to protect the body from invading germs or viruses but if for some reason there is a defect or disturbance in it, then problems like blood infection start to occur. This disease is mostly caused due to under reaction or overreaction.

Under Reaction

In this condition the immune system of the patient is unable to function properly or stops working.

Over reaction

This condition occurs when a virus or bacteria acts as a trigger for the immune system.

Other causes of blood infection are
  • Bone infection.
  • Scratches or injury to the upper part of the skin.
  • Steroid medicines.
  • Older people especially when they are suffering from other health-related diseases.
  • Diabetes.
  • Unsafe delivery of pregnant women.
  • Pneumonia, appendicitis, meningitis and urinary tract infection.
Prevention methods of Blood Infection (Sepsis)

Infections spread more rapidly in people who have a weakened immune system. In such a situation, they should take special care of themselves and follow the prevention methods listed below-

  • Get vaccinated regularly. Get your young children vaccinated for pneumonia, flu, or other infections from time to time.
  • Pay special attention to cleanliness. Take a bath daily.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating.
  • Drink plenty of water and fluids.
  • Take care of bruises, wounds or scratches on the body.
  • Old people should especially take care of water intake.
  • Get your pulse, temperature, blood pressure and respiratory rate checked regularly.
  • Women should avoid getting the flu during pregnancy.

Home remedies for Blood Infection (Sepsis)

Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C

Vitamin C-rich substances play an important role in the treatment of blood poisoning. It helps in preventing the early symptoms of most blood infections. It aids in the growth and repair of damaged cells in the body. Vitamin C is an immunity booster and is also helpful in healing wounds. It helps patients fight bacteria in the blood and improve the functioning of small blood vessels.

Turmeric

Turmeric is widely known as a natural remedy for many ailments, including blood poisoning. It increases the amount of protein in the body. Apart from this, the antibacterial and antibiotic properties present in it work to fight and protect against various types of infections occurring in the body. Therefore, turmeric is considered to be the most effective medicine in getting rid of infection.

Garlic

Garlic is also a great natural immunity booster. Hence it is an effective natural remedy for blood infection i.e. sepsis. It contains a component called allicin, which prevents blood infection. Consuming garlic regularly with honey gets rid of blood poisoning.

Honey

Honey is considered great for controlling the immune system. It effectively fights bacteria that cause sepsis. Consuming honey helps to cure all kinds of infections. Apart from this, if it is applied on the wound, it also helps in healing the wound.

Slippery elm

Treating a cut or wound with slippery elm can prevent bacteria from entering the body through the wound.

Potato

Potato juice is considered an effective remedy for sepsis inflammation that appears on the skin. Keeping potato slices on the affected parts and rubbing them with light hands for 15-20 minutes reduces swelling.

एनीमिया के सबसे आम लक्षण आंखों का पीलापन, थकान और कमजोरी महसूस होना हैं। लेकिन इसके कुछ अन्य लक्षण भी होते हैं। जो किसी एक ही व्यक्ति में नहीं होते हैं। बल्कि विभिन्न प्रकार से व्यक्तियों में नजर आते हैं। आइए जानते हैं इन अन्य लक्षणों के बारे में;

(Iron Deficiency Anemia)-

(Thalassaemia)-

(Pernicious Anemia)-

(Sickle Cell Anemia)-

(Aplastic Anemia)-

(Megaloblastic Anemia)-

(Vitamin Deficiency Anemia)-

Blood Pressure: An Overview

We have all grown up believing and seeing that fluctuations in blood pressure is generally associated with old generations. People aged 65+ but having a deep insight would make it clear that it is a disease as much as cold, fever, or any other normal illness. People of any age group can be prone to it.

There are certain reasons for the occurrence of low/high BP, which we would learn through the course of this blog. Let us start by learning what exactly is BP.

What is Blood Pressure

As the term suggests, BP is the pressure by which the heart pumps blood to the body. It is measured in Millimeter of Mercury (mmHg) which is denoted as Systolic/ Diastolic (120/80) The BP uses two numbers which are categorized as-

  • Systolic Blood Pressure: It is the force that is used to pump blood to the body.
  • Diastolic Blood Pressure: This is the force used when the heart rests while beating.

Types of Blood Pressure

  • High blood pressure-High BP, also known as Hypertension, is often a result of unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, consumption of excessive alcohol, overweight, and not getting enough exercise.
  • Low Blood Pressure-Low BP, also called Hypotension, is not an alarming situation without symptoms and it is a condition where the flow of blood to the organs of the body is insufficient.

What do we infer from the Readings?

Ideal Blood Pressure

A healthy heart is the one with readings between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg.

High Blood Pressure

When the readings are 140/90 mmHg or higher. It is considered as High BP.

Low Blood Pressure

The ideal readings for BP are 90/60 mmHg. Anything below this is considered as Low blood pressure

Stages of High Blood Pressure

High BP in itself is dangerous, but further complications arise with the shooting BP. It falls into 4 categories given below-

Diagnosis

  • A doctor or a specialist measures the BP. It is checked by placing an inflatable arm cuff around the arm, using a pressure-measuring gauge.
  • Home BP monitors are inexpensive and are widely available over the counter. You don’t need a prescription to buy one. However, using a home BP monitoring device isn’t a substitute for paying visits to the doctor as home BP  measuring devices may have some limitations.

Long term effects of High Blood Pressure

Since high blood pressure cannot be detected without a blood test it is also termed as ‘Silent Killer’. and if left unnoticed for a long time, it causes the heart to pump harder and work overtime, possibly leading to several serious and life-threatening, long-term health conditions such as-

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • Kidney failure

Causes of fluctuations in Blood Pressure

  • Age– BP normally rises with age and those aged 65 or above tend to be prone to it.
  • Race/Ethnicity– High BP is a common phenomenon among African Americans.
  • Being Overweight– People who are overweight are likely to develop high BP.
  • Sex– Sex is also an important factor as men are more prone than women to develop high BP before the age of 55 whereas, after the age of 55, women are more likely to develop it.
  • Lifestyle– Poor lifestyle or ill habits can raise your risk for high BP, few examples are eating too much sodium (salt) or not consuming enough potassium, lack of exercise, too much alcohol, or smoking.
  • Family history– If high BP runs in your lineage then the risk of developing high BP automatically increases.

Control Measures

Eat Healthy

Limit Sodium

It is essential to limit the amount of salt (sodium) and increase the amount of potassium in your meals in order to manage your BP. Consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Increase Potassium

Leafy greens, high on potassium such as romaine, lettuce, arugula, kale, turnip greens, collard greens, spinach, beet greens, and Swiss chard helps a lot in lowering high BP. Banana, unsalted seeds of pumpkin, squash, or sunflower is also a rich source of potassium.

Consume Low Fats

Skimmed milk and yogurt are a rich sources of calcium and low in fats. These are great for lowering increased BP.

Take food items rich in Omega-3 fatty acids

Fatty fish like salmon or mackerel are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation, lower triglycerides and regulate your BP.

Consume Natural Ingredients that lowers blood pressure

Garlic contains nitric acid which helps in lowering high blood pressure and herbs such as basil, cinnamon, thyme, rosemary helps in cutting your sodium intake.

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure
  • You can also use ayurvedic products for BP available in the market. ‘ Aarogyam Shakti BP Norma Lotion’, is one of the best natural products for high blood pressure. It works wonders on lowering your high BP. All you need to do is to apply the lotion as per directions given on the bottle and you will notice the changes within few days of its use.
  • There are certain natural ingredients that are treated as Ayurvedic medicines to control blood pressure such as Honey, Amla, Gotu Kola, and Ashwagandha. These are some of the best herbal remedies for BP.

Improving Lifestyle

  • Regular Exercise– Exercise is great for keeping yourself fit. It also keep you away from diseases and it can also help in lowering your BP. Try stretching exercises and spend at least 2 and a half hours per week.
  • Maintain Healthy Weight– Being overweight increases your risk for high BP. Maintaining a healthy weight can help you in keeping your BP under control which also reduces your risk for other health problems.
  • Avoid Alcohol Consumption- Drinking too much alcohol can raise your BP and also increases your calories intake which further results in weight gain. Men should limit their quantity to two drinks per day, and women should only take one.
  • QUIT Smoking and Tobacco- Smoking and tobacco increase your blood pressure which puts you at higher risk for serious health issues such as a heart attack or stroke.
  • Manage your Stress- Managing stress is the key to a healthy life. It can improve your emotional and physical well-being. This further reduced your risk to high BP. Relaxing activities such as listening to music, focusing on something that keeps you calm or peaceful, and meditation really helps.

Medication for Blood Pressure

If there are no improvements in the increased BP. You might also need to follow a proper course of medicines to regulate your BP.

Diabetes: An Overview

Symptoms-causes-remedies-of-diabetes-Aren’t we all accustomed to Modern lifestyle and the delicacies it offer? While we enjoy everything that modernity has to offer, it has given us plenty of diseases and illnesses.

One such disease is Diabetes and people of all age groups are prone to it. This was most common among elderly people aged 45 or above but in present times it is increasingly noted among children too. Here we will know the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and remedies of Diabetes.

Diabetes (or Diabetes Mellitus) is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Insulin (produced by the pancreas) moves the glucose from the blood to the cells to be stored and later use for energy. In Diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin produced cannot be put to effective use.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin Dependent)-

This is usually common among children as well as youngsters. In this type of diabetes, your pancreas does not produce insulin and your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Those having this type, need to take insulin every day in order to stay alive. The cause and means of this type are not known so far.

Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin Dependent)-

Type 2 diabetes is the result of the body’s ineffective use of insulin. It is generally found among adults and old age people. People with diabetes generally have type 2. These are generally said to have Insulin resistance. This type of diabetes is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.

Apart from the above listed common and most frequent types there are some uncommon types too which are-

Gestational diabetes-

It is a type that occurs usually during pregnancy. The glucose level shoots up during pregnancy. It goes away after the baby is delivered. The two categories under this are-

Class A1- This is easily managed and controlled by keeping a check on your diet and also proper exercise.

Class A2- This type of diabetes does not go away unless you take insulin or other medications.

Prediabetes (Impaired glucose tolerance)-

Prediabetes is an uncommon type. It occurs when your blood sugar levels are slightly high, but not high enough to be categorized as diabetes. The condition can also be considered as a warning sign. It turns to diabetes if proper measures are taken on time to prevent it. Impaired fasting glucose is a subcategory of prediabetes. In this, the sugar level goes up during fasting but it is not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes

There are some common diabetes symptoms that occur in all types. Yo should immediately see a doctor if you notice any symptoms of diabetes. Get your blood sugar checked.

  • If you urinate a lot, especially at night
  • You keep feeling thirsty all the time
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Get frequent hunger pangs
  • Eyesight problems such as weak or blurry vision
  • Have a numb or tingling feeling on hands or feet
  • Tiredness
  • Skin problems such as having unusually dry skin
  • Your sores heal slowly
  • Easily catch infections
For Type 1 Diabetes-

In addition to the above diabetes symptoms, people with type 1 often feel nauseated, vomit, and stomach pain which can increase severely in a few months.

For Type 2 Diabetes-

The symptoms might not be noticeable for a long time. This makes it worse. It is better to look out for risk factors. As soon as you notice any changes in your body, immediately consult a doctor.

For Gestational Diabetes-

This does not have any added symptoms and only the common symptoms can be noticed, which are also rare.

Complications arising from Diabetes

This type affects major organs of the body and can be life-threatening in worse cases. It can cause complications such as-

  • Heart and blood vessel disease
  • Foot damage
  • Skin and mouth conditions
  • Nerve damage (Neuropathy)
  • Kidney damage (Nephropathy)
  • Eye damage
  • Pregnancy complications
Type 2 Diabetes-

Listed below are some other factors in addition to Type 1 risk factors such as-

  • Slow healing
  • Hearing impairment
  • Skin conditions
  • Sleep apnea
  • Alzheimer’s disease
Gestational Diabetes-

If you do not manage your gestational diabetes on time, your blood sugar levels may worsen and bring complications in your pregnancy resultant to which your new-born baby’s health might be affected. This results in problems such as breathing difficulties, and also low blood sugar. It can also cause shoulder dystocia (shoulders of child get stuck in the birth canal during labor-pain).

They are also at risk of developing diabetes later when they grow up. Pregnant women should get their sugar levels in control. This ensure the well-being of their offspring.

Diabetes Tests-

There are different tests for different types of diabetes and the normal levels also differ along with each test. Mentioned below are the charts for different types of diabetes:

(Normal Blood Pressure)-

(High Blood Pressure)-

(Low Blood Pressure)–

(Rheumatoid arthritis)
(Ankylosing spondylitis)

Bone spur- Causes, Symptoms & Treatment methods

A bone spur, also known as an osteophyte, is a bony projection that develops along the edges of bones. These growths usually form in response to long-term stress, pressure, or inflammation on a particular area of a bone. Bone spurs can occur in various parts of the body, such as the spine, shoulders, hands, hips, knees, and feet.

Most bone spurs do not cause any symptoms and may go unnoticed, but they can sometimes lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility if they impinge on nearby tissues or nerves. Treatment options for bone spurs include pain management, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and in severe cases, surgery to remove the spur. However, the decision to treat a bone spur typically depends on the severity of symptoms and how much it affects a person's quality of life.

Symptoms of Bone spur

The symptoms of a bone spur can vary depending on its location and size. It's important to note that some people may have bone spurs without experiencing any symptoms, while others may experience:

  • Pain and discomfort, especially when they rub against nearby nerves or tissues.
  • Swelling in the affected area due to inflammation.
  • Stiffness, especially if they are located in joints such as the knee, hip, or shoulder.
  • Limit the range of motion in joints and make it difficult to perform certain movements.
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected area.
  • Weakness in the muscle, especially if they affect the muscles or tendons.
Causes of Bone spur

Bone spurs typically develop as a result of long-term stress, pressure, or inflammation on a specific area of a bone. Here are some of the common causes of bone spurs:

Osteoarthritis:

This is the most common cause of bone spurs. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the joints wears down, leading to bone-on-bone contact, and causing the body to create new bone growth in the area.

Aging:

As people age, their bones become weaker and more susceptible to damage, which can lead to the development of bone spurs.

Poor posture:

Poor posture can put excessive stress on certain areas of the body, leading to the development of bone spurs over time.

Overuse:

Repetitive movements or overuse of certain joints or muscles can cause bone spurs to form.

Genetics:

Some people may be more predisposed to developing bone spurs due to their genetic makeup.

Other conditions:

Bone spurs can also be associated with other medical conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, spinal stenosis, or Achilles tendonitis.

Diagnosis of Bone spur

The diagnosis of bone spurs usually begins with a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. The doctor may ask the patient about their symptoms, such as pain or stiffness in the affected area, and may perform tests to assess the range of motion and stability of the joint.

Imaging tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans, may also be used to confirm the presence of bone spurs and to determine their size, shape, and location. These tests can also help rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms, such as arthritis or a herniated disc.

If the bone spurs are causing significant pain or limiting the patient's mobility, the doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a bone scan or ultrasound, to further evaluate the condition and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment options may include medications to relieve pain and inflammation, physical therapy, or surgery to remove the bone spurs.

Treatment methods of Bone spur

The treatment depends on the severity of symptoms, the location of the bone spur, and the underlying cause. Its treatment typically focuses on relieving pain and inflammation, improving mobility and strength, and addressing the underlying cause of the bone spur. Here are some of the common treatment options:

Pain management-

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen may help relieve pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy-

Exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and mobility may help reduce symptoms and prevent further complications.

Orthotics or shoe inserts-

These devices can help redistribute pressure and reduce pain caused by bone spurs in the feet.

Injection therapy-

Corticosteroid injections may be used to reduce inflammation and pain in the affected area.

Surgery-

In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the bone spur, especially if it is causing significant pain, discomfort, or interfering with normal function.

Lifestyle modifications-

Making lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, improving posture, and avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms can also help reduce the risk of bone spurs.

It's essential to work closely with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment approach for bone spurs, as treatment options may vary depending on the individual's condition and medical history.

When to see a Doctor?

You should see a doctor if you experience persistent pain or discomfort in a joint or other affected area, as this may be a sign of a bone spur. Some other signs that you may need to see a doctor include:

  • Swelling or redness around the affected area.
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in a joint.
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected area.
  • Difficulty walking or performing daily activities.
  • Pain that worsens with activity or movement.
  • Pain that does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relievers.

If you have a history of osteoarthritis, repetitive stress injuries, or other medical conditions that increase the risk of bone spurs, it's essential to seek medical attention if you experience any new symptoms.

(Toe curls)-

(Heel raise)-

(Figure eight curl)-

(Towel grip and pull)-

(Ball roll)-

(Toe circles)-

(Toe spreading)-

Wrist Pain: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Wrist is the joint that connects the forearm and hand. It contains many small bones that help you bend, straighten, and rotate your arm and wrist. Wrist pain can be caused by disease or injury that affects every aspect of the wrist, including the bones, ligaments, and connective tissues. It can also be caused by fatigue or a major problem. Wrist strokes and muscle strain are common causes, while pinched nerves in the wrist can also cause pain.

Causes of Wrist pain

Pain can occur for many reasons, be it simple fatigue or a major problem. The main causes of Wrist pain are

Wrist sprain

Symptoms of a sprain include:

Wrist tendonitis

Wrist tendonitis occurs when one or more of these tendons become swollen which causes the following conditions-

The most common causes of wrist tendonitis are

Arthritis

Several different types of arthritis can affect the wrist. They include

Wrist fracture

Symptoms of Wrist pain

The symptoms of wrist pain can vary depending on the cause. Osteoarthritis pain is often described as similar to a dull toothache, whereas carpal tunnel syndrome usually causes numbness or tingling, especially at night. The exact location of your wrist pain provides clues to your symptoms.

How to prevent Wrist pain?

Some repetitive motions can cause pain in the wrist or further injure it. Since most people spend a lot of time typing, they can change the desk setup to relieve irritation to the wrist and surrounding tendons. Following steps can help prevent wrist pain:

Treatment for Wrist pain

For chronic and severe pain, your doctor may recommend the following-

Home remedies for Wrist pain-

Self-care treatment can ease the pain in your wrist. They are especially useful for sprains or tendonitis. These are as follows

When to see a doctor?

It is important to see a doctor if

  • Ligaments are healthy connective tissues which control joint movements. Ligaments around the wrist help stabilize the position of your arm and also let you control the movement and sprain is an injury to these ligaments.
  • Sprains occur when the wrist ligaments are stretched beyond their limits. Some of the most common causes are uneven landing from a jump or ankle rolling.
    • Pain when moving.
    • Swelling around the joints.
    • Bruising or discoloration.
    • Burning or tingling sensation called paresthesia.
    • Tendons are strong tissues that pass through the wrist. They connect the muscles of the arm to the bones of the hand and fingers.
    • The flexor tendons of your palm allow your fingers to grasp objects. The extensor tendons at the top of your hand help your fingers straighten and release objects.
    • Morning stiffness.
    • Sometimes a little swelling.
    • Some people report crepitus (popping) when they move their wrist.
    • Repetitive wrist motion (Working with machine)
    • Sports that repeatedly put pressure on the wrist (golf, tennis)
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome results from excessive stress on the wrist, especially from repetitive motion. This causes inflammation and scar tissue.
    • It can compress (pinch) the nerves that run through the wrist. This is called the median nerve. This condition causes pain that gets worse at night, plus a tingling sensation in palms, thumb, and fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common workplace injury.
    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA):Inflammation of the joints that causes joint destruction and deterioration.
    • Gout Gout occurs when too much uric acid (a waste product of digestion) builds up in your blood. Excess acid leads to the formation of tiny, painful crystals in the joints and soft tissues.
    • OsteoarthritisThis occurs when cartilage, the connective tissue that covers the ends of bones, wears out. In osteoarthritis, bones rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.
    • Wrist fractures are a common injury that is more likely to occur in people with weak bones or those suffering from osteoporosis.
    • Scaphoid fracture is a type of wrist fracture. The scaphoid is situated on the side of your thumb which often breaks if you fall and hold the outstretched arm.
    • A scaphoid fracture causes swelling, pain, and tenderness under the base of the thumb.
    • The pain may get worse when you try to pinch or reach for something.
    • Lower your keyboard so that your wrists don't bend as you type.
    • Take regular breaks from typing and rest your hands.
    • Use a wrist rest with the keyboard, mouse, and trackpad.
    • Learn how to use the mouse with your non-dominant hand.
    • Injection or oral medications to relieve symptoms.
    • Carpal tunnel surgery to release pressure on the median nerve.
    • Surgical release of the compressed tendons.
    • Surgery to relieve bone-to-bone contact in arthritis. This may include procedures to maintain movement, such as possible wrist fusion, bone removal, or complete or partial wrist replacement.
    • Surgeons may use arthroscopic techniques for the removal of inflamed tissue (wrist debridement).
    • Rest Stop using the joint to reduce inflammation. However, don't rest too long. This can cause stiffness and slow down your recovery.
    • Ice Apply an ice pack every 3 to 4 hours for 20 minutes for the first two days. Do not use it for more than 20 minutes, otherwise you may damage the tissues.
    • CompressionWrap an elastic bandage around your wrist. Start at the base of the finger and go just below the elbow. Do it vigorously without stopping circulation. If your finger is numb, loosen it.
    • Immobilization In case of injury, carpal tunnel syndrome or wrist arthritis, braces or splints can help. Fractures may require a cast.
    • OsteoarthritisIn case of injury, carpal tunnel syndrome or wrist arthritis, braces or splints can help. Fractures may require a cast.
    • Wrist pain interferes with daily activities.
    • Numbness or tingling worsens and there is little or no feeling in the fingers or hands.
    • Simple hand gestures are no longer possible.
    • Weakness makes it hard to keep things going.

What is Encephalitis: Know its Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain, often caused by a viral infection. It can also be caused by a bacterial infection, non-infectious inflammatory condition, or an abnormal immune response in which the immune system mistakenly attacks brain tissue. Mild cases of encephalitis mostly recover fully with treatment. However, it may be life threatening and very serious in certain cases, therefore, prompt treatment is required. It can affect people of all ages, but mostly young and old are at higher risk.

Types of Encephalitis

There are basically two types of encephalitis-

Infectious-

Infectious encephalitis is also known as primary encephalitis. It occurs as a result of seizure of the brain by pathogens. The most common cause is a virus. Other organisms that can cause encephalitis include bacteria, parasites and fungi.

Autoimmune-

This type of encephalitis is caused when the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain. This is called autoimmune encephalitis.

According to the medical research, it is estimated that 40% of cases of encephalitis are infectious, 20% are autoimmune and about 40% are caused by unknown causes.

Causes of Encephalitis

Encephalitis can be caused by viruses and bacteria, including those transmitted by mosquitoes and other arthropods. Depending on what is causing the infection, the condition can develop suddenly or slowly. Following are the causes of Encephalitis-

Arbovirus-

This refers to viruses carried by insects and ticks. There are several types of mosquito-borne arboviral encephalitis. These include Western Equine, Eastern Equine, St. Louis and LaCross encephalitis. Arboviral encephalitis is often mild, it can be very severe and is often associated with permanent neurological damage.

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE)-

Herpes simplex can lead to encephalitis in some people. It is considered the most serious type because it can cause significant neurological dysfunction. It often affects the elderly and very young children.

Rabies-

In some underdeveloped and developing countries, cases of encephalitis can be caused by rabies, a virus that is transmitted by certain animals including dogs, raccoons, and foxes. If left untreated, this condition can lead to severe encephalitis, which can be fatal.

Risk Factors for Encephalitis

Factors that can increase your risk of disease include-

  • Age- Infants and the elderly have a higher risk of developing encephalitis. It is more common than the herpes simplex virus in people in the 20-40 age group.

  • Low immunity- Patients who have HIV/AIDS, take drugs to suppress immunity, or have other conditions that cause a weakened immune system are at higher risk.

  • Geographical Distribution and Season- Encephalitis is more susceptible in geographic areas where mosquitoes or tick-borne viruses are common. They also contribute to the spread of encephalitis.

Symptoms of Encephalitis

Mild cases of encephalitis usually cause fever, joint and muscle pain, headache and a general feeling of weakness. Some patients also experience sore throat, muscle rigidity, upper respiratory infection, confusion, and lethargy.

In severe cases, the patient may suffer from-

  • Cramps.
  • Personality changes.
  • Double vision.
  • Crossed eyes.
  • Increased intracranial pressure.
  • Motor dysfunction.
  • Partial paralysis.
  • Seizures or loss of consciousness.
  • Hearing or speech problems.
  • Nausea.
  • Irritability.
How to diagnose Encephalitis?

To diagnose encephalitis, the doctor reviews the patient's medical history and performs a physical examination. Patients are also frequently asked about their travel history to identify the cause of their disease. Depending on the results of these tests, your doctor may also prescribe-

  • Blood and urine test.
  • Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain- showing detailed images of brain structures and showing abnormalities.
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to detect irregularities in the electrical activity of the brain.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) Capture ELISA (MAC-ELISA) can identify which virus causes encephalitis immediately after infection.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), can be used to identify viral DNA.
  • Spinal tap, also called lumbar puncture, collects a small amount of fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) that surrounds the brain and spine. The sample is then examined in the laboratory for infectious agents.
Treatment for Encephalitis

Mild Encephalitis requires the following treatment-

Bed rest-

Several medications are prescribed by doctors to the patient during bed rest. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium may be used to relieve headache and fever.

Antiviral drugs-

Encephalitis caused by several viruses requires antiviral treatment. The antiviral drugs listed below are used to treat encephalitis-

  • Acyclovir.
  • Ganciclovir.
  • Foscarnet.

Some viruses, including insect-borne viruses, do not respond to this treatment. Antiviral drugs are well tolerated. Kidney damage is rare as a side effect to it.

Treatment for Severe Encephalitis includes-

  • Breathing support.
  • Ensure adequate hydration and essential minerals.
  • Corticosteroids help reduce swelling and pressure in the skull.
  • Phenytoin helps to stop or prevent seizures.
  • Physical Therapy is also useful to improve strength, flexibility, balance and mobility.
  • Occupational Therapy uses adaptive products to support you in your daily activities.
  • Psychotherapy is also a great measure to acquire behavioral skills to improve mood disorders and personality changes.
When to see a doctor?

If you experience severe symptoms of encephalitis, seek medical attention immediately. Do not ignore severe headache and impaired consciousness with this disease. If an infant or child has signs of encephalitis, make an appointment with a doctor.

Dementia: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Dementia: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Dementia is a condition that is described as a decrease in brain function. To have dementia, your brain function needs to become deficient in at least two areas. The facets of brain activity that may be affected by dementia are thinking, memory, judgment, behavior and language. Besides this, dementia is not a disease, but a condition caused by another illness or injury.

Some types of dementia are progressive and can get worse over time. The condition can result in mild to severe mental impairment. However, some types are treatable or reversible if you get the right kind of medical help early.

Types of Dementia

There are four main types of dementia-

Alzheimer's disease-

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. For most people, the first signs of Alzheimer's are problems with memory, perception, thinking or language.

Vascular dementia-

Vascular dementia is the second most frequent type of dementia. Common early signs of vascular dementia include problems with planning or organizing, decision making, or problem solving.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)-

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is mainly caused by Lewy body disease. Symptoms of DLB include difficulty concentrating, delusions, and problems with movement and sleep. It is closely related to Parkinson's disease.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD)-

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the least common types of dementia. It is sometimes referred to as Pick's disease or frontal lobe dementia.

Common symptoms of FTD include changes in personality and behavior and/or language difficulties.

Mixed dementia-

It is said to be a combination of two or more types of dementia. Alzheimer's disease with vascular dementia is the most common combination. It is most common in people of s80 years and older.

Causes of Dementia

Dementia occurs due to the degeneration of neurons in the brain. Neurons are cells that carry messages from the brain and spinal cord in the form of impulses.

The degeneration can occur due to several reasons including diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Neurodegenerative diseases responsible for dementia include-

  • Parkinson’s.
  • Alzheimer’s.
  • Damage caused by chronic alcoholism.
  • Vascular dementia.
  • Infections of the brain.
  • Tumors inside the brain.

Other possible causes for dementia are-

1. Metabolic disorders such as-

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency.
  • Hypothyroidism.
  • Liver disorders.

2. Structural brain disorders such as subdural hematoma.

3. Exposure to toxins such as lead.

Risk factors of Dementia

Factors that can increase your chances of developing dementia include-

  • High blood pressure.
  • Physical inactivity.
  • Drinking too much alcohol.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Poor diet.
  • Smoking.

Symptoms of Dementia

Symptoms of dementia depend on the stage you are experiencing.

Mild dementia symptoms include-

  • Personality changes.
  • Feeling angry frequently.
  • Depression.
  • Forgetfulness.
  • Difficulty in problem solving.
  • Short term memory lapses.
  • Struggling to express ideas or emotions.

Moderate dementia symptoms are more serious and might require help from others to deal with. They include-

  • Poor judgment.
  • Significant personality and mood changes.
  • Significantly large memory loss.
  • Increased frustration and confusion.
  • Inability to perform simple tasks such as bathing.

Mental faculties continue to decline in severe dementia, leading to symptoms such as-

  • Inability to communicate.
  • Inability to perform regular body functions.
  • Greater risk of infections.
  • Requiring help for all kinds of daily activities.

Prevention for Dementia

Certain measures may help to lower the risk of dementia-

  • Regularly exercising.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Consuming a healthy diet.
  • Maintaining a moderate weight.
  • Seek treatment for conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar.
  • Limiting alcohol consumption.
  • Wearing a protective cap for contact sports can also reduce the risk of recurrent head injury, which can be a risk factor for dementia.

Treatment for Dementia

Treating dementia typically means making symptoms easier to live with by making them less harmful. Dementia treatment is not designed as a cure but as a way of managing the condition. Treatment include-

Medications such as memantine and cholinesterase inhibitors are common in Alzheimer’s treatment. These help patients slow down the progression of the disease and maintain mental function for a while longer.

Other treatments include changing your lifestyle to better manage dementia-

  • Reduce clutter in your environment to improve focus.
  • Modify common tasks into something more manageable.
  • Take part in occupational therapy.

When to see a doctor?

If you suspect you or your family member has signs and symptoms of dementia, you should see a dementia specialist.

What is Trauma & how does it differ from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? Know its Causes and Symptoms

A time based emotional response to a particular event is known as trauma that causes deep damage or impact on the mind. This profound trauma or damage can be in any form, such as physical, psychological, social, mental and emotional. There are different reasons for each of these. Trauma can occur once, twice, or on multiple occasions, and more than one type of trauma can also be experienced at a given point of time.

The inability to recover from a traumatic experience can lead to long term emotional damage, leading to susceptibility to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This may sometimes lead to deaths, and disabilities. These can be prevented if people are given proper information and necessary training about ways to deal with it.

Types of Trauma

  • Physical or Acute Trauma-This results from any damage to the body due to a stressful or dangerous event. This damage can happen due to many reasons. Out of all these reasons, road accidents are the major cause of trauma all over the world.
  • Emotional or Chronic Trauma-Emotional and psychological trauma can be caused by repeated and persistent physical and mental injury, such as child abuse, bullying, etc. but sometimes people can suffer emotional and psychological trauma without any physical damage. Women are more prone to emotional trauma than men.
  • Complex trauma-Complex trauma is described as exposure to multiple traumatic incidents, often severe and prevalent. This is generally associated with kids, which tends to disrupt their mental growth. Examples include sexual abuse, incest, ongoing physical or emotional abuse, mental torture or being held captive, abandonment, etc.

Causes of Trauma

  • Divorce or traumatic grief.
  • Death of a Family Member, Lover, Friend, Teacher, or Pet.
  • Physical pain or injury (such as a serious car accident).
  • Serious illness/ Medical trauma.
  • Natural disaster.
  • War or military trauma.
  • Natural disaster.
  • Community violence (interracial, police, gang-related, etc.).
  • School violence or bullying.
  • Moving to a new place or forced displacement.
  • Being a witness to any of the above traumatic events.
  • Drug overdose.
  • Abandonment by parents or feeling neglected.
  • Domestic violence or Sexual abuse.

Symptoms of Trauma

People respond to traumatic events in different ways. There are often no obvious signs, but people can have severe emotional reactions. Shock and denial are a common reaction soon after the incident. Shock and denial are typically used to protect oneself from the emotional impact of the event.

Symptoms of Trauma can range from mild to severe. These depend on the person's characteristics, mental condition, exposure to past traumatic events, the type of event, and the background of how the person handles the emotion.

Emotional Symptoms of Trauma

  • Numbness, denial, and disbelief.
  • Confusion or trouble in concentrating.
  • Anger, irritability, mood swings.
  • Worry and fear.
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, and self-blame.
  • Staying aloof.
  • Be sad and disappointed.
  • Feeling cut off or numb from others.

Physical Symptoms of Trauma

  • Insomnia or nightmares.
  • Fatigue.
  • Hamstring strain.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Feeling aches and pains.
  • Feeling of passion and ferocity.
  • To be easily startled or trembled.
  • Headache.
  • Poor digestive system.
  • Sweating profusely.

An important thing to note is that trauma doesn't just happen in adults. Children can also suffer from this.

What is Trauma in children?

According to research, children are at higher risk of trauma as their brain continues to develop. Children experience high states of stress during frightening or terrifying events, and then their body releases hormones related to stress and fear. This type of trauma in children can disrupt normal brain development. The resulting long-lasting trauma can affect a child's emotional development, mental and physical health. Because of this, the feeling of fear and helplessness can persist until adulthood and there is a risk of getting trauma in the future too.

Symptoms of Trauma in 0-3 year olds

  • Not eating properly.
  • Frequent sleep disturbances.
  • Irritable behavior.
  • Child being scared.
  • To be surprised at something.
  • Delayed speaking.
  • Aggressive behavior.
  • Talking about and remembering the traumatic event.

Symptoms of Trauma in 3-6 year old child

  • Procrastination and worrisome thoughts.
  • Feeling scared all the time.
  • Feeling hopeless and helpless.
  • Headache.
  • Having a hard time understanding what's bothering them.
  • Daydreaming and always being irritable.
  • Aggressive behavior.
  • Be sad or worried.
  • Not making friends and trying to be alone.

How does Trauma differ from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Although, often used interchangeably, trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) differ from each other in their degree of time. Trauma is a specific time based phenomena which when worsens takes the form of a disorder known as PTSD.

How to Recover from situation of Trauma

  • Follow a healthy routine.
  • Talk to family members, friends about your troubled situation.
  • Maintain positive attitude towards things & situations.
  • Watch comedy movies and shows. Spending time with family, reading, listening and sharing jokes proves to be of great help.
  • Practice deep breathing, yoga and meditation for at least 30 minutes every day.
  • Try to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking. These increase the symptoms of trauma such as depression, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness.

Therapeutic Treatments for Trauma

  • Cognitive therapy-This talk therapy helps you identify your way of thinking. In this, you are made to realize that your quality of life is being affected due to negative thinking.
  • Exposure therapy or Somatic experiencing-This therapy helps you to safely face the situation that scares you, so that you can learn how to deal with it effectively. One dimension of exposure therapy is a virtual reality program, in which you are introduced to the setting in which you experience trauma.
  • Sensorimotor psychotherapy-It combines psychotherapy with certain body-based techniques that could help the patient to turn their trauma into a source of strength.
  • Acupoint stimulation-Acupoint stimulation involves a trained practitioner apply pressure to specific points on the body, which induces relaxation & provide a calming effect, releasing the stress out of the body.
  • Touch therapies-Certain touch therapies such as Reiki, healing touch, and therapeutic touch therapy helps a person gather positive vibes from a practitioner performing these therapies.
  • Group therapy-It consists of creating a group of people who are going through similar experiences so that they can share their experiences & be vocal about their miseries. This helps to overcome traumatic situations.

When to visit a Psychiatrist?

  • If all the efforts to cope up with the traumatic events fail and the condition doesn’t get better, then they should seek help from a mental healthcare professional. It is particularly important to seek help if the symptoms of trauma interfere with routine life or impacting relationships.
  • Even those with low to mild symptoms can talk to someone about how they feel to have a better hold on themselves and feel better.

Vertigo: All You Need To Know

Vertigo is a medical condition characterized by a spinning sensation, in which a person feels that they or the objects around them are moving or rotating. The spinning sensation may be barely noticeable or maybe so intense making normal life very difficult. Attacks of vertigo can occur suddenly and last for several hours or very long or even days. It can happen at any age, but is common in older people about 65 years and above.

Types of Vertigo

There are different types of vertigo

  • Peripheral vertigoIt usually occurs as a result of a disturbance in the organs of the inner ear.
  • Central vertigoCentral vertigo is connected to the problem in the central nervous system. It is usually associated with a disturbance in either the brainstem or the cerebellum.

Causes of Vertigo

Different diseases and conditions can cause vertigo. They include

  • LabyrinthitisLabyrinthitis is inflammation of the inner ear.
  • Meniere’s diseaseA buildup of fluid in the inner ear can cause vertigo.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigoCertain head movement triggers vertigo. It usually affects older adults.
  • Brainstem diseaseStroke.

Other causes include

  • Head injuries or trauma.
  • Ear surgery.
  • Migraine headache..
  • Prolonged bed rest.
  • Certain medications.
  • Syphilis.

Signs and Symptoms of Vertigo

Some common signs and symptoms of vertigo include

  • Vomiting.
  • Nausea.
  • Dizziness.
  • A loss of balance that makes standing or walking difficult.
  • Lightheadedness.
  • Headache.
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear.

Risk factors of Vertigo

Certain risk factors can increase your chances of vertigo. These include

  • Being over the age of 50.
  • Being a woman.
  • Experiencing a head injury.
  • Taking certain medications, especially antidepressants or antipsychotics.
  • Experiencing any medical condition that affects balance or your ears.
  • Having a previous episode of vertigo.
  • Family history.
  • Experiencing an inner ear infection.
  • Having high levels of stress.
  • Alcohol consumption.

Diagnosis of Vertigo

During an evaluation, the doctor may obtain a full history of symptoms and events including medications that have been taken, migraine headache and recent head injury or ear infection.

A physical examination is then performed, during a physical examination, the doctor may likely look for

Signs and symptoms of dizziness that are triggered by eye or head movements, Inability to control eye movements and involuntary movement of the eye from side to side.

If the cause is difficult to determine, additional testing may be performed

  • An MRI scan to visualize your head and body. Doctors can use the images to identify and diagnose a variety of conditions.
  • Videonystagmography (VNG) uses a camera to measure involuntary eye movement while the head is placed in a different position. This can help determine if the dizziness is due to an inner ear disorder. The patient wears glasses containing a video camera.
  • Electronystagmography (ENG) is similar to VNG. This procedure uses electrodes to detect abnormal eye movements. The patient wears a headset with electrodes placed around the eyes.

Treatment for Vertigo

Some types of vertigo resolve without treatment

  • Prescription drugs such as lorazepam, meclizine can be used to relieve the dizziness caused by Meniere’s disease.
  • Symptoms of nausea can be relieved by using drugs such as antihistamines.
  • Steroids, antiviral drugs or antibiotics may be prescribed for a patient with an acute disorder affecting the middle ear.
  • Sometimes, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) can be treated with an inner surgery, a bone plug is inserted into the inner ear to block the area triggering vertigo.
  • Avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco smoking can also help.
  • The volume of the fluid retained in the body that can build up in the inner ear can also be reduced by restricting salt.

Home Remedies for Vertigo

  • Epley maneuverThe Epley maneuver is used in combination with medications to treat benign paroxysmal posterior vertigo (BPPV) and also to prevent its recurrence.

How to do

  • While sitting on bed, place a pillow behind you.
  • Turn your head 45° to the side of the affected ear.
  • Lie down with your head in the same position and rest your shoulders on the pillow. Your head should be bent over the bed for 30 seconds.
  • Tilt your head 90° to the opposite ear (without lifting your head).
  • Hold for 30 seconds and then rotate your entire body 90° to the side of the ear that is now down.
  • After 30 seconds, sit up slowly and keep your head in a neutral position.
  • Repeat the process three to four times a day.

Half somersault maneuver

The half somersault maneuver is an alternative to the Epley maneuver and is relatively more effective for some people. However, more than half a somersault is required to relieve benign paroxysmal posterior vertigo (BPPV).

How to do

  • Kneel on the floor, then sit on your calves until you place your palms on the floor directly in front of your bent knees.
  • Pull in your back and tilt your neck to look at the ceiling. This is the starting position.
  • Bring your body to the starting position of a somersault, touching the top of your head to the floor just in front of the knees.
  • While remaining in this somersault position, turn your head to the side most affected by the dizziness so that you are facing the corresponding elbow.
  • Lift your turned head and the rest of your upper body and sit back on your calves.
  • Stretch your neck to raise your head above body level.
  • Return to your starting position.

Brandt-Daroff exercise

The Brandt-Daroff exercise is very effective for vertigo caused by labyrinthitis or BPPV, especially for those who are sensitive to the redistribution maneuver or for whom other maneuvers have no positive effect.

How to do

  • Sit up straight, this will be your starting position.
  • Lie on your side with your nose facing up at an angle of about 45°.
  • Remain in this position for about 30 seconds or until the dizziness subsides before returning to the starting position.
  • Repeat the same exercise on the other side.
  • Ginkgo bilobaGinkgo biloba extract can also be used to relieve symptoms of dizziness or vertigo. Ginkgo biloba is widely used in Eastern medicine for its antioxidant properties. It can also help increase blood flow to the brain, thereby improving cognitive function. You can prepare a therapeutic tea with ginkgo biloba extract or ask your doctor to start a supplement.
  • AlmondsAlmonds are full of vitamins B and E, which obviously make them very effective in treating vertigo. Soak four almonds overnight in water. In the morning, make a paste of soaked almonds and add it to a glass of warm milk and consume it.
  • Ginger teaGinger is known for its healing properties, which can help relieve symptoms of vertigo. This can be done by increasing blood circulation in your body and relieving nausea. Boil 2 cups of water in a pan, add a few pieces of raw ginger, turn off the heat and cover the pot. Soak the ginger in hot water for about 10 minutes, then strain the tea into a cup. Add a few drops of honey or lemon to enhance the taste.
  • AcupressureAcupressure is a safe and inexpensive technique for treating vertigo caused by Meniere's disease. It involves pressing specific points of the body with fingers or a spoon to stimulate blood flow and relieve various ailments.

When to see a doctor?

See your doctor, if you experience severe dizziness or vertigo along with severe headache or chest pain.

Aneurysm: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Posted 14 June, 2022

Aneurysm: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Aneurysm is a fairly common medical condition that occurs when an artery wall weakens and leads to a bulge. The bulge can cause damage to the artery and lead to internal bleeding, which can prove to be fatal in certain circumstances. It can be caused by hereditary or acquired diseases.

Aneurysm can develop anywhere in the body, but are most commonly found in the brain, legs, aorta (vessel of heart) and spleen. As the aneurysm grows in size, the risk of ruptureincreaseswhich causes uncontrolled bleeding.

Types of Aneurysm

Aneurysms are classified by their location in the body or by their shape. Some of the most common aneurysm sites seen in the body are-

Aortic aneurysm-These aneurysms are found in the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to other major organs in the body. The diameter of the aorta is 2-3 cm and the aortic aneurysm can bulge up to 5 cm or more. Within the aorta, aneurysms are usually seen in several areas, including-

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)-This aneurysm occurs in the area of the aorta that runs through the abdomen or stomach region. This is the most common aortic aneurysm.

  • Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (TAA)-This aneurysm occurs in the area of the aorta that runs through the chest.

  • Cerebral or brain aneurysm-This aneurysm occurs in the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.

Peripheral aneurysm- This occurs in blood vessels that supply blood to other parts of the body such as legs, groin or neck. Types of peripheral aneurysm include-

  • Carotid artery aneurysm-This aneurysm occurs in an artery placed in the neck called the carotid artery.

  • Femoral artery aneurysm-This occurs in an artery of groin or thigh region called the femoral artery.

  • Mesenteric artery aneurysm-This aneurysm occurs in the artery that carries blood to the intestines.

  • Popliteal aneurysm-This is the most common peripheral aneurysm that occurs behind the knee.

  • Splenic artery aneurysm-This aneurysm occurs in an artery called the splenic artery, which supplies blood to the spleen.

  • Visceral aneurysm-This occurs in the arteries that supply blood to the bowel or kidneys.

Aneurysms are also classified according to the shape of the bulge-

Fusiform aneurysm-The bulge in this type of aneurysm forms on all sides of the blood vessel.

Sacral aneurysm-The bulge in this type of aneurysm only forms on one side of the blood vessel.

Berry aneurysm-The bulge in this type of aneurysm looks like a berry on a narrow stalk. This is the most common type of cerebral aneurysm.

Pseudoaneurysm or false aneurysm-Sometimes a rupture in the lining of the blood vessel wall causes internal bleeding. The leakage is retained by the surrounding soft tissue or the perivascular tissue of the blood vessel, creating a pseudo aneurysm.

Causes of Aneurysm

The exact cause of aneurysm is still unknown but certain factors can contribute to them which includes-

  • Tissue damage to the arteries can lead to aneurysm. The damage may be caused by blockages due to fatty deposits. The blockage can get the heart pumping faster, increasing the pressure on the arteries leading to damage.

  • Conditions such as high blood pressure and atherosclerotic disease can lead to aneurysm.

  • Several systemic conditions can cause vasculitis or inflammation of the blood vessels, which leads to damaging and weakening of the walls.

Risk factors of Aneurysm

Common risk factors associated with aneurysm are-

  • Being above the age of 60.

  • Being obese.

  • Smoking.

  • Having a diet high in fat and cholesterol.

  • Pregnancy increases the chances of aneurysm developing in the spleen.

  • Family history of heart disease and heart attack.

Symptoms of Aneurysm

In most cases, the aneurysm can be clinically silent, ie. It does not present any symptoms unless it ruptures. However, if present, symptoms usually depend on the location of the aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) can be difficult to detect because it is often asymptomatic and slow-growing. In some cases, the aneurysm may never rupture. AAA augmentation can be represented by-

  • Back pain.

  • Deep and constant pain in the abdomen or side of the abdomen.

  • Throbbing near the navel.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) can cause symptoms like-

  • Breathing difficulties.

  • Difficulty swallowing.

  • Pain in the jaw, chest and upper back.

  • Hoarseness.

  • Persistent cough.

  • Shortness of breath.

In case of an unruptured cerebral aneurysm, the following symptoms may occur-

  • Blurred or double vision.

  • Pain above and behind one eye and dilated pupil.

  • Numbness on one side of the face.

A ruptured aneurysm can occur with-

  • Blurred or double vision.

  • Confusion.

  • Increased heart rate.

  • Bleeding.

  • Drooping eyelids.

  • Loss of consciousness.

  • Nausea and vomiting.

  • Sensitivity to light.

  • Seizure.

  • Stiff neck.

  • Severe headache.

Diagnosis for Aneurysm

Diagnosing an aneurysm depends on its location. Based on where it is, your doctor might ask you to consult a vascular or cardiothoracic surgeon.

Ultrasound and CT scans are typically used to help diagnose irregularities in the blood vessels.

The CT scans take X-rays of different parts of the body and look for any blockages, disruptions or bulges in the circulatory system.

Treatment for Aneurysm

Treatment for aneurysm depends on its location-

For aneurysm in the chest or abdomen, an endovascular stent graft procedure may be required. Stent grafts are usually over open surgeries as they are less invasive and can be used to reinforce blood vessels and make them stronger.

Lowering blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels is important as well, and you might be recommended medication for that. Lowering blood pressure is important in keeping the aneurysm from rupture.

When to see a doctor?

You need to see a doctor immediately if you suddenly have a severe headache, loss of consciousness, or have other symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm.

AIDS- Know the Causes, Symptoms & Treatment methods

AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome & is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). AIDS occurs when the immune system is severely damaged, making the body vulnerable to infections and diseases that a healthy immune system would normally be able to fight off.

HIV attacks and weakens the immune system, which is responsible for fighting off infections and diseases. Over time, the virus can destroy immune cells, such as CD4 T-cells, and reduce the body's ability to fight off infections. Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS, which is the most advanced stage of the disease.

Causes of AIDS
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the primary cause of AIDS.
  • HIV is transmitted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.
  • Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person is the most common mode of transmission.
  • Sharing needles or syringes with an infected person, particularly among people who inject drugs, is also a major mode of transmission.
  • From mother to child during pregnancy, delivery or breastfeeding, an infected mother can pass HIV to her child.
  • Other modes of transmission include blood transfusions, organ transplants, and accidental exposure to HIV through needle-stick injuries or other occupational exposures.
Symptoms of AIDS
  • Early stage symptoms of HIV infection may include fever, headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash. However, these symptoms are often mild and can be mistaken for other illnesses.
  • As HIV progresses, more severe symptoms can develop, such as chronic diarrhea, weight loss, night sweats, and frequent infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis.
  • Other symptoms of advanced HIV/AIDS may include skin rashes or bumps, mouth sores, genital sores, and neurological problems like confusion, memory loss, and neuropathy.
  • People with AIDS are also at higher risk for developing certain cancers, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphoma, and cervical cancer, as well as opportunistic infections like cryptococcal meningitis, toxoplasmosis, and pneumocystis pneumonia.
  • The time it takes for HIV to progress to AIDS varies widely from person to person, and some people with HIV may never develop AIDS. However, without treatment, most people with HIV will eventually progress to AIDS within 10 years or longer.
  • It is important to note that many of the symptoms of HIV and AIDS can be caused by other illnesses, and the only way to know for sure if someone is infected with HIV is to get tested.
Treatment of AIDS

There is currently no cure for AIDS, but with early diagnosis and proper treatment, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a combination of medicines that can suppress the virus and prevent it from damaging the immune system. ART can also reduce the risk of transmission to others.

The goal of ART is to reduce the amount of HIV in the blood to undetectable levels, which can take several months. ART can have side effects, including nausea, fatigue, and diarrhea, but these side effects usually go away within a few weeks. It is important to take ART every day, as directed by a healthcare provider, to ensure the medication is effective.

In addition to ART, people with HIV may need treatment for other infections and conditions, such as tuberculosis or sexually transmitted infections. They may also need to make lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise, to improve their overall health and well-being.

Prevention of AIDS

Prevention remains a key strategy in the fight against AIDS. This includes promoting safe sex practices, such as using condoms and reducing the number of sexual partners. Needle exchange programs and drug treatment programs can help to reduce the risk of HIV transmission among people who inject drugs.

HIV testing and counseling is also a critical component of prevention efforts. Early diagnosis of HIV can help people living with HIV to access treatment early, reduce the risk of transmission to others, and improve their overall health outcomes.

It is important to note that people with HIV who are on ART and have undetectable levels of the virus in their blood are much less likely to transmit the virus to others. This is known as U=U, or undetectable equals untransmittable.

Baldness: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Baldness, also known as alopecia or hair loss, refers to an excessive loss of hair that usually affects the scalp. It is considered normal to shed about 50 to 100 hair strands daily with new growth replacing these hairs. However, if the lost hairs are not renewed or come back thinner than the one that was shed, it eventually leads to baldness.

Although both men and women experience hair loss, it is not as common in women as in men and appears differently.

Patterns of Baldness

There exist two baldness patterns in humans- Male pattern baldness and Female pattern baldness.

  • Men with male pattern baldness tend to develop a receding hairline and bald spots. In women, the hair becomes thinner rather than fall out and the resulting baldness may be less severe than in men.
  • In the early stage of male pattern baldness, hair loss is noticed at the front of the head (temple) and gradually recedes to the back where the scalp in the upper and crown areas become more visible. In female pattern baldness, women lose hair from all over their head, starting at the part line. Hair at the temple may also recede.
  • Female pattern and male pattern baldness usually occurs in people in their 40s and beyond.

Causes of Baldness

Baldness is usually related to one or more of the following factors-

Genetics-

Genetics play a significant role in developing baldness. Men and women can inherit the gene from parent baldness. You are more prone to developing baldness if your father, mother or other close relatives have experienced hair loss.

Illness-

Baldness can develop after a significant illness. The stress from illness or surgery may prompt the body to temporarily cease such tasks as hair production. Some other specific conditions such as syphilis, iron deficiency, thyroid disorder or some certain type of cancer can trigger hair loss.

Medications and supplements-

Hair loss can result from the use of certain medications, such as those used for treating cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis and heart problems.

Autoimmune disease-

A rare autoimmune disease known as alopecia areata that causes the immune system to attack the hair follicle can lead to hair loss.

Hormonal changes-

Changes in the level of certain hormones in men and women can lead to hair loss. Androgen is a hormone that plays a role in hair loss. A tumor of the pituitary gland that secretes androgen may play a role in hair loss.

Menopause-

In women, female pattern baldness becomes more common after menopause. This occurs because estrogen in the body decreases.

Risk factors of Baldness

Risk factors include-

  • Family history of baldness from your mother or father.
  • Age.
  • Significant weight loss.
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes and lupus.
  • Stress.
  • Poor nutrition.

Symptoms of Baldness

The most common symptoms of baldness in men are-

  • Bald patch on top of the scalp.
  • Receding hairline from the front.
  • Partial baldness.

The most common symptoms of baldness in women are-

  • Excessive loss of hair.
  • Overall thinning of hair.
  • Reduction in the density of hair.

Diagnosis for Baldness

Your doctor will perform a physical exam on your scalp to see the pattern of hair loss and review your medical and family history. The doctor may also carry out certain tests such as-

  • Blood test to uncover underlying medical conditions that may be related to your hair loss.
  • Scalp biopsy where few hairs are plucked from your scalp to examine the hair root. This helps to determine whether hair loss is due to certain infection.
  • Pull test, your doctor pulls multiple hairs to see how many hairs come out. The doctor can then determine the stage of the shedding process.

How to treat Baldness?

Early diagnosis is encouraged as it can get you on a treatment plan and minimize future loss. Treatments are available and may depend on the cause of your baldness.

If your baldness is caused by an underlying medical condition, treatment for such a condition may be of significant importance. If the excessive hair loss is caused by a certain medication that you are using, your doctor may ask you to stop using such medication for a while.

1. If hair loss is a result of iron deficiency, your doctor may prescribe an iron supplement.

2. If it is as a result of a gene that was passed from your parents (genetics), medications are available such as-

  • Minoxidil (to treat pattern baldness in men and women).
  • Finasteride and dutasteride (to treat hair loss in men). This is an oral medication.
  • Spironolactone is one of the oral medications used to treat female pattern baldness.
Laser therapy-

Laser comb and helmet which works by emitting low levels of laser light to help stimulate hair regrowth are used. This treatment is FDA approved.

Leech therapy-

Ayurveda uses alternative medical therapy, including the use of leeches to suck blood from the scalp to increase circulation. It helps cover bald spots with fresh hair growth.

Acupuncture-

Acupuncture, a Chinese medical practice, involves activating trigger points that balances the body fluids and energies, this resolves the baldness problem by promoting hair growth. Some people may choose a hair transplant. During a hair transplant, hair is removed from an area with healthy hair growth and a transplant is made to the spot where the hair is missing. A surgical procedure to treat baldness is expensive with possible risks of bleeding and scarring.

Home Remedies for Baldness

Castor oil-

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that can help reduce dandruff and hair loss. Frequent massage with warm castor oil 20 minutes before bath stimulates hair roots and increases blood circulation in the scalp.

Coconut oil-

Coconut oil contains nourishing fats and alpha-tocopherol that rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp. Massaging with warm coconut oil increases blood circulation to the hair and stimulates hair growth.

Peppermint oil-

This essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which is good for thick and long hair.

Jojoba oil-

Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. This can help in nourishing hair and promoting hair growth. Massaging this oil onto the scalp for a few minutes is effective for boosting hair growth.

Extreme dandruff and scalp infections can sometimes lead to baldness. In such cases, tea tree oil works well as it is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. For this, dilute the essential oil by mixing it with a carrier oil. Apply this on the scalp and leave it for at least an hour then rinse using a mild shampoo.

  • Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and guavas.
  • Lean meats like chicken and fish (to get enough protein to the hair follicles).
  • Foods that contain vitamin A and beta-carotene, such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cantaloupe, chayote and apricots.
  • Foods high in silica such as strawberries, red peppers, barley, oats, rice and beans.
  • Milk, eggs and yogurt.

When to see a doctor?

If you are experiencing unusual hair loss, it is best to consult your doctor, especially if you notice a rash or pain on the scalp.

Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies for Head lice

Lice are small and wingless parasitic insects that suck blood from the scalp, living between the hairs. Head lice are a common problem which is especially found in school children of 4-11 years. It is not harmful but can stay in the hair for a long time. If left untreated, then it becomes very difficult to deal with them. Lice are contagious and spread rapidly from one to another. Sometimes it is very difficult to get rid of them but lice are not dangerous. Itching and infection can occur due to their bite or sucking blood on the skin of children's scalp but it does not cause any disease.

Lice parasites are born in the human body. It is usually found only in the hair. Their body is long and wingless and has an antenna with four parts. The head is small and the mouth is piercing. It pierces the skin with its mouth and drinks blood. When it drinks blood, it starts itching. While piercing the body, it releases non-conscious matter (sensation void) due to which there is no pain when it bites. This mostly happens due to the lack of cleanliness in people with long hair. The lifespan of an adult louse is 30 days on the nutritious skin. The female louse lays about 90 eggs and within 7-10 days more lice hatch from the eggs and in the next 10 days, it turns into an adult louse. Similarly, this process continues leading to the multiplication of lice.

Symptoms of Head lice

Itchy head-

Itching of the scalp is considered a common symptom of lice. However, only itching in the head is not seen to be associated with this problem. Apart from this, itching in the neck and ears is also a common symptom. The reaction of the scalp with the saliva of the lice causes allergic reactions and itching. When a person gets the infection, they may not experience itching for the first two to six weeks. Sometimes it takes a few weeks for the lice to reach the scalp and cause itching.

Having louse eggs in the hair-

Lice eggs get stuck in sticky hair. It is very difficult to see new louse eggs because it's too small. These eggs are found around the ears and in the hairline of the neck. It is easy to see the empty lice eggs because they are light in colour and are easily visible on the scalp.

Problems caused by running lice-

People often feel a lot of trouble due to their walking or crawling on the hair or head.

Causes of Hair lice

Lice are spread through direct contact. It does not come by jumping or flying from one head to another. Due to direct or indirect contact with the head of the person suffering from the problem of lice, it gets in the head. Lice survive for short periods in clothing, hats and hairbrushes but the risk of infection from objects is high. The problem of lice is seen more in girls than in boys and in women than in men. Lice spread in a person's hair in many ways. The following are the causes of hair lice-

  • Coming into contact with someone who has already had lice (e.g personal contact is common at school or sporting activities, at home or while camping).
  • Wearing clothing of a person with lice such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms or hair ribbons.
  • Using the comb, brush or towel of a person with lice.
  • Using the same bedding, sofa, pillow, carpet, or coming into contact with lice animals.
  • Young children also develop this problem when they come into contact with their schoolmates (aged 3-11 years) or a family member.
  • The elders of a house where there are children with lice also remain at risk of getting lice.

Home remedies to get rid of Head lice

Combing louse in wet hair-

On wet hair, lice can be easily removed by moving the hair from top to bottom with a low wide-toothed comb. The hair should be completely wet in this process, comb the entire hair at least twice. Repeat this method every two or three days. By doing this, all the head lice will be removed within about two weeks.

Teatree oil and fennel oil are beneficial in removing louse-

Lice are also destroyed by the use of oils made from natural plants, for example, tea tree oil or fennel oil. Apply it to the hair and leave it for 7-8 hours and wash and comb the hair.

Neem is beneficial in removing louse-

Make a paste of neem leaves and apply it to the hair and wash it after drying. This kills the lice.

Lemon and ginger paste is effective in removing lice-

Mix one teaspoon of ginger paste in two teaspoons of lemon juice and leave it on your scalp for 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water when it dries. Doing this process twice a week proves to be effective.

Coconut oil and apple cider vinegar are effective in removing lice-

Mix coconut oil and apple cider vinegar and apply it to the hair. Wash and comb the hair after a few hours. Coconut oil is good for hair but as a remedy to kill lice, adding apple vinegar to this oil and applying it on the hair removes the lice easily.

Garlic and lemon paste beneficial in removing louse-

Apply lemon juice mixed with garlic paste on the hair and wash the hair after an hour. By doing this, the louse easily gets killed because garlic is used as a medicine for lice.

Treatment for Head lice

  • Medicines applied to the scalp are used to remove or eliminate head lice. The most common ways to treat lice are by using medicated creams, lotions or shampoos due to which the lice easily die.
  • Most lice eggs live on your clothes. Therefore, to remove them, the clothes worn should be cleaned by soaking them in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. This method kills the big lice and also kills their eggs. Lice in the body are able to live only in the place where they get nutrition. At the same time, it goes away by cleaning the body and washing clothes regularly.
  • Children going to school or daycare centres should be explained not to make head to head contact with each other so that the yoke does not spread from one to the other.
  • Itching may persist even after all the head lice are gone. It is an allergic reaction to their bite. The use of cortisone cream or calamine lotion is recommended to overcome this.

When to go to the doctor?

There is no need to visit a doctor if there are lice, but personal hygiene should be taken care of. Along with this, home remedies, medicated oils, shampoos and lifestyle changes can get rid of lice.
