In Ayurveda, sesame oil is considered the queen of oils. This oil has been used for healing for centuries due to the medicinal properties of this oil, it has been described as good for humans in the Vedas of ancient India. This oil has antibacterial properties which help to cure skin fungi like common skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and athletes foot.


Sesame essential oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and antiviral oil which reduces the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. This oil reduces stress and depression. It helps in controlling blood pressure and maintaining oral health. The anti- inflammatory agents of this oil are helpful in detoxifying the skin, treating anemia, diabetes, eye, and cancer. In addition to skin and hair, sesame oil is also used in making food.

Benefits of Sesame oil

Treatment of diabetes-

According to the report of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), sesame oil helps in controlling the level of diabetes. The oil obtained from white sesame helps in regulating blood glucose and reducing the harmful effects of diabetes. In this way, sesame oil works to provide relief in diabetes.

Beneficial for blood pressure-

Polyunsaturated fatty acids present in sesame oil reduce high blood pressure levels. Apart from this, the antioxidants, unsaturated fatty acids, and vitamin E present in it also work to control blood pressure.

Great for cardiovascular health-

Sesame oil is used as a diet to keep the heart-healthy. This oil has an antioxidant effect that helps in keeping the heart safe for a long time. This oil also contains lignans (a type of fiber) that works to control cholesterol in the body. Thus, sesame oil is considered good for cardiovascular risks.

Helpful in reducing inflammation-

Sesame oil has anti-inflammatory properties which work to protect the body from inflammatory problems. This oil benefits the body in both external and internal inflammation. In addition, sesame oil also reduces hand and foot injuries and pain.

For anemia-

Sesame oil reduces the risk of anemia. In fact, polyunsaturated fatty acids and phenolic phytochemicals present in sesame and its oil help to prevent anemia. These compounds overcome blood loss by increasing red blood cells (RBC) and hemoglobin in the body. Apart from this, sesame oil is also good for the mechanism.

Good for the skin-

Sesame oil helps in reducing skin-related problems. It has healing properties which help in healing the wound quickly. Sesame oil contains an element called tocopherol which protects the skin from the suns ultraviolet rays. Apart from this, sesame oil works to cure problems like sunburn.

Beneficial for the eyes-

Sesame oil cures eye problems. Sesame oil reduces the problems related to diabetic retinopathy i.e. diabetic eye disease (inflammation in the retina). The sesamin compounds present in sesame oil help reduce inflammation of the retina. Additionally, this oil also helps in preventing blindness.

Useful for hair-

Sesame oil works to nourish the scalp. This oil has anti-bacterial properties which remove the bacteria and protects the scalp from infection. Additionally, the antibacterials present in sesame oil also help in removing dandruff.

For Arthritis-

The oil obtained from black sesame helps in reducing this problem. The anti- inflammatory effect of lignans present in sesame oil reduces the symptoms of inflammation and related diseases such as arthritis in the body.

Pain reliever-

According to NCBI research, sesame oil helps in relieving pain because it has an anti-nociceptive (pain-reducing) effect. Therefore, sesame oil is used to relieve joint pain and toothache. In addition, sesame oil is also helpful in reducing the pain caused by menstrual syndrome, cuts, and scratches.

Good source of Vitamin E-

Sesame oil contains tocopherol which is a form of Vitamin E. Therefore, it is considered a good source of Vitamin E. Tocopherol acts like antioxidants that reduce the risks of many diseases by protecting the body from free radicals because these free radicals cause cancer and heart disease after a time.

Good source of antioxidants-

According to research conducted by NCBI, sesame oil is rich in elements called sesamin and sesamol. Both these elements act as powerful antioxidants. Another research suggests that antioxidant effects can reduce the number of diseases such as ischemic heart disease (coronary artery disease), diabetes, and oxidative stress.

Side effects of Sesame oil

● Sensitive people should avoid using sesame oil because they may be allergic to them.
● Sesame oil has the potential to reduce diabetes. In such a situation, it should not be taken with blood sugar-reducing medicines because it can reduce the level of blood sugar.
● Sesame oil helps in reducing high blood pressure. Therefore, a person suffering from low blood pressure should not consume it.
● Sesame oil has high-calorie content. Therefore, a high intake of it can increase body weight.
