Cholesterol is mentioned as meda dhatu (lipid tissue) in ayurveda, which is a fat tissue. Keeping the meda dhatu balanced and healthy helps to maintain good cholesterol, which supports and lubricates the shrotas (circulatory channels of the body). To maintain this balance, one needs to balance the agni (digestive fire) since good digestion is the key to good health and balanced doshas.

When we eat oily or fatty food, the Jataragni (main digestive fire) breaks down the food and the bhutagni present in liver helps to screen toxins after which the rasa (good essence of food) enters the bloodstream where they are absorbed by the tissues and supports good cholesterol but, if we eat unhealthy food followed by an unhealthy lifestyle, the digestive fire gets disturbed and the food is neither digested properly nor the toxins are removed properly which results in the formation of ama (toxins). Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna)
