At present, due to wrong eating habits and busy routines, almost every third person is falling victim to heart diseases due to which the person is not able to take care of his health and starts ignoring the initial symptoms. Sometime before our body starts giving us the signs of a heart attack, we ignore it due to busy schedules, the result of which often proves fatal. The pain that arises in the chest before a heart attack is called angina. When the blood flow in the veins of the heart is not proper, the heart does not get enough oxygen due to which the pain of angina starts arising in the jaw, arm and upper back.
What is Angina?
When there is a blockage in the veins carrying blood to a person's heart or due to any reason the blood flow to the heart slows down due to which pain or discomfort is felt in the chest. This condition is known as angina. It is a symptom of coronary artery disease and is known as ischemic chest pain in medical language.
Oxygen is transmitted through the blood to the heart but due to the small amount of blood reaching the heart, oxygen is not able to reach the heart properly due to which the heart is not able to pump properly. In such a situation, there is pressure on the heart and this interrupted blood flow weakens or completely destroys the heart muscle. During this, a person may have a heart attack. Usually, this pain can get better in no time but sometimes it can also cause a lot of problems.
Types of Angina
Stable Angina-
This is the most common type of angina which occurs due to excessive physical activity or taking more stress. However, angina gets better with rest and taking medicine.
Unstable Angina-
It is considered the most serious and dangerous of the types of angina. It does not get better even after taking a rest or taking medicine that's why it is called unstable angina. There is a lot of pain in this type of angina which happens repeatedly. In such a situation a heart attack can occur, therefore, a doctor must be contacted immediately.
Variant Angina-
Variant angina is rare and is seen in very few people. This problem occurs while resting or sleeping. During this, the arteries of the heart suddenly start narrowing. As a result, there is unbearable pain in the chest which can be cured with medicine.
Micro Vascular Angina-
There is another type of microvascular angina. When a blockage occurs in the smallest artery of a person's heart due to which it is not able to work properly. Therefore, the required amount of blood does not reach the heart. This problem is mostly seen in women.
Symptoms of Angina
- Unbearable pain in the chest.
- Feeling anxious.
- Feeling of heartburn problem.
- Pain in arms, neck, jaw, shoulders and back.
- Feeling tired.
- Difficulty in breathing.
- Feeling weak.
- Frequent sweating.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Sour belching.
Causes of Angina
There are many reasons for having angina, the main reasons for which are the following-
Arterial Plaque-
Plaque in the arteries is the main cause of angina. In this, plaque accumulates inside the arteries which give rise to blockage. This blockage causes some amount of fat (fluid), cholesterol and other elements to collect on the walls of the arteries and narrow the artery due to which there is a problem in the blood circulation in the heart. Due to this, there is pain and discomfort in the chest. This is where the risk of heart attack begins. However, it can be treated by a surgery called coronary angioplasty.
Smoking-
Angina is more likely to occur in a person who smokes in excess.
High levels of cholesterol-
The risk of angina increases even if the amount of cholesterol in the body is high.
High blood pressure-
Angina can also be caused by high blood pressure. Therefore, people suffering from the problem of BP must get treatment for high blood pressure.
Stress full life-
It is believed that taking too much stress sometimes gives rise to serious diseases like angina or heart attack because we start ignoring our health in such a situation.
Diabetes-
Diabetes means high sugar starts to damage the nerves of the heart after a time. Angina can also occur due to this.
Ways to avoid Angina
- Minimize the intake of oily and fatty food. Excessive intake of these accumulates in the form of a layer on the arteries due to which there is a blockage in the flow of blood.
- Consumption of sweets increases the level of cholesterol in the body. This can lead to the formation of blood clots or the thickening of the blood which later proves to be fatal for the body.
- Treat those diseases first which increase the risk of angina such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol in the blood.
- Avoid anxiety, stress and depression.
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep every day.
- Do not smoke or consume alcohol at all.
- Exercise regularly.
- Eat a balanced diet.
Treatment for Angina
Doing ECG-
The status of the heartbeat is detected by the ECG. Therefore, if there is any heart-related problem, then it can be detected by it.
Taking medicines-
Apart from having tests, angina can also be treated with some medicines.
Bypass surgery-
Angina can also be treated with bypass surgery. In this surgery, the blood flow reaching the heart is corrected by opening the blockages in the veins of the heart.
Angioplasty-
Angioplasty is also called PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention). In this surgery, a small balloon is inserted into the narrowed coronary artery. The balloon is now inflated to widen this narrowed artery. A small wire mesh (stent) is then inserted to keep the artery wide. By doing this, the circulation of blood in the heart improves. Thus, angioplasty is a good way of treating angina.
Coronary angiography-
When the treatment of angina is not cured by many methods. The doctor then advises the patient to undergo coronary angiography. To examine the inside of the heart's blood vessels during coronary angiography, X-ray imaging (CHBI) is used. This procedure is called cardiac catheterization.
Home remedies to cure and avoid Angina-
Heart blockage is the main cause of angina. It is beneficial to use these home methods-
Arjun tree-
The bark of the Arjuna tree is very beneficial in the treatment of heart-related diseases such as blockage in the arteries, high cholesterol, blood pressure and coronary artery disease because its bark contains natural oxidizing. For this reason, a decoction made from the bark of the Arjuna tree is used as medicine to prevent heart attack.
Lemonade-
Lemon is a powerful antioxidant-rich in Vitamin C. It helps in improving blood pressure and reducing inflammation of the arteries. Apart from this, lemon also helps in lowering blood cholesterol levels and clearing the arteries. For this, make a mixture by mixing a little honey, black pepper powder and juice of one lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. Now drink this mixture once or twice daily.
Garlic is beneficial-
Garlic is one of the best remedies to clear clogged arteries. It dilates blood vessels and improves blood circulation. For this, cut some garlic bud, mix it in a cup of milk and boil it, and cool it a bit. Now drink it before sleeping.
Pomegranate juice-
Phytochemicals are found in pomegranate which prevents damage to the lining of the arteries as an anti-oxidant. For this, drink a glass of pomegranate juice daily. In this way, pomegranate is also beneficial in getting relief from the symptoms of artery blockage.
Consumption of red chilli-
An element called capsaicin present in red pepper protects the heart from bad cholesterol or LDL. It lowers the level of bad cholesterol in the blood which is the main reason for the clogging of arteries. Apart from this, it also reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke by improving blood circulation. For this, mix half or one teaspoon of red chilli in a cup of hot water. Now consume this mixture regularly for a few days.
