Makhana is a type of dry fruit which is used by the whole world today. Some people use it in sweet dishes or desserts, for paneer or chickpea vegetables, some people like its kheer very much, others roast it lightly, in milk. Thus people like to enjoy it according to their taste. In India, Makhane is also used as a 'fasting dish' and puja functions on Navratri and other occasions.

 
What is Makhana?

Makhana is called Lotus Seeds or Fox nut in some places. It is a nutritious and delicious food item that is derived from a plant called the aerial fox located in the pond water. It is dry and chubby and has many medicinal properties which keep the body healthy. Therefore, it is used in many types of Ayurvedic medicines and as a strength-enhancing medicine. Makhane is also known by the names Phool-Makhana and Gorgon Nut.

 
Medicinal properties present in Makhana

Makhana has all the medicinal properties which are considered necessary and beneficial for health. According to a report published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) site, Makhana contains calcium, protein, carbohydrates, phosphorus, fat, besides anti-inflammatory, antioxidant carotene, nicotinic acid, iron, vitamin B-1, and anti-tumors, etc. which provide miraculous benefits in many diseases including fever, constipation, diarrhea, kidney, diabetes, fertility, lack of sperm, and urinary system.

 
Benefits of Makhana-
Good source of protein-

Regular intake of Makhana does not reduce the amount of protein in the body because a high quantity of protein is found in it. There are about 10.71 grams of protein in 100 grams of Makhana. Therefore, it is said that along with meeting the required amount of protein in the body by eating Makhana, the problems caused by its deficiency can also be removed.

 
For Gums-

Makhana has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties which help to prevent gingivitis and tooth decay due to bacterial effects.

 
To lose weight-

Eating Makhane helps in getting rid of obesity. According to the NCBI report, ethanol extract of Makhane works by controlling the fat cells in the body, reducing its weight. Therefore, the correct and regular use of fox-nuts (makhana) proves helpful in reducing weight.

 
For Diabetes-

Makhana is also used to get relief from diabetes. Resistant starch found in the Makhana has a hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) effect based on an NCBI research report which proves helpful in controlling diabetes. Besides, the use of Makhana also proves helpful in controlling insulin.

 
For blood pressure-

Regular use of Makhana works to relieve problems like blood pressure. An element called alkaloids in the Makhana helps in reducing the problem of hypertension (high blood pressure). Therefore, the intake of Makhane is good for regulating BP.

 
For pregnancy-

According to the research report of NCBI, the intake of Makhana helps in removing the weakness caused during pregnancy and childbirth. Makhane is used as a variety of dishes for this. Makhana contains many nutrients like magnesium, potassium, protein, and iron, which help keep a woman healthy during pregnancy.

 
As an anti-aging-

Makhana can also be used to relieve skin-related problems because the Makhana has abundant antioxidant properties which can prove to help remove the effects of wrinkles and aging on the skin.

 
Side-effects of Makhana

There is no known side effect of Makhane anyway but even then, it should be used for a limited time during constipation.

  • Makhana contains a good amount of fiber. Therefore, excessive intake can sometimes cause gas and stomach cramps.
  • People who are allergic to Makhana should take it only on the advice of a doctor.
