Know the Causes, Symptoms and Prevention methods of Japanese Encephalitis

The rainy season can increase the risk of spreading diseases caused by mosquito bites, among which malaria, chikungunya, dengue and Zika virus are prominent. Chances of getting Japanese encephalitis are also high during this season. Japanese Encephalitis is colloquially known as Japanese fever. Japanese fever is believed to be a disease spread through viral infection. It can occur in any season but it mostly occurs during the rainy season or in the summer season because mosquitoes are found abundantly during this time.

The disease is spread through the bite of mosquitoes infected with the flavivirus. It is an infection fever, in which the patient has a high fever. Apart from this, headaches, seizures occur and, in some cases, patients also die. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Japanese fever is more common in rural areas. Mostly where rice is cultivated more. It is believed that flaviviruses thrive in rice fields.

Stages of Japanese Encephalitis (Japanese Fever)

There are generally three stages of Japanese fever which are as follows-

Prodromal stage-

This is the early stage of Japanese fever in which fever starts before the brain and spinal cord are affected. Also, it lasts for two to three days. During this time most people feel chills along with restlessness and headache. This phase lasts for about a week.

Acute encephalitis stage-

In this stage, fever affects the brain and spinal cord of the person. Also, it lasts for at least 3 to 4 days. In this stage, the fever already present increases. Along with this, patients start having symptoms like decreased ability to think and concentrate, loss of facial expression, stiffness in the neck, muscle spasms, dehydration, weight loss and unusual movements. In many cases, the patient may slip into a coma at this stage. Apart from this, in this phase, sometimes there are sudden changes in the behaviour of the patient such as confusion, unconscious speaking, anxiety, disorientation etc.

Recovery stage-

In this phase, the active inflammation begins to subside and the temperature, ESR normal and neurological symptoms begin to stabilize. Also, there are improvements in it. This phase usually lasts for 1 to 2 months. The patient starts recovering in this stage.

Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis (Japanese Fever)

In general, the initial symptoms of Japanese fever are similar to those of normal fever but apart from this other symptom are also seen. Let's know about these other symptoms-

  • High fever.
  • Sharp shivering (cold) feeling.
  • Having a headache.
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis.
  • Neck stiffness.
  • Confusion or seizures.
  • Feeling unable to speak.
  • Lack of consciousness.
  • Uncontrollable tremors in body parts.
  • Having physical weakness.
  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Feeling tired.
  • Bad taste in the mouth.
  • The following symptoms are seen in children.
  • Change in behavior of children.
  • Bulging of the fontanels in young children and new-borns.
  • Not waking up to have a meal at the proper time.
  • To be irritable.
  • Stiffness in the body.
  • Vomiting or nausea.

Causes of Japanese encephalitis (Japanese fever)

Japanese encephalitis is caused by the flavi virus which infects animals and humans. It is a carrier-borne disease. A carrier is an organism that does not itself cause disease but other flaviviruses are transmitted from infected animals (pigs and birds) to uninfected individuals. It affects the membranes surrounding the brain.

Prevention of Japanese Encephalitis (Japanese fever)

  • Avoid mosquito bites.
  • Get the vaccine for Japanese encephalitis.
  • Use anti-mosquito cream or mustard oil on the body.
  • Use mosquito net while sleeping.
  • Wear clothes that completely cover the body.
  • Fumigation of houses with neem leaves daily during the rainy season or summer season.
  • Do not leave containers full of water open.
  • Keep washroom and kitchen dry.
  • Install nets on doors and windows.
  • Change the water of the pot and cooler daily.
  • Maintain cleanliness around the house.
  • Get the mosquito repellent sprayed at the appropriate time.

What is Infection of the Navel? Know its Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies

The navel is a favourable place for many types of microbes to grow in the body. Dust, bacteria, fungus and many other types of germs get trapped inside the navel and start multiplying their numbers due to which the infection spreads. People with a recent abdominal operation are at a higher risk of developing an infection in the navel. Some conditions, which often occur in infants and children, such as thrush and athlete's foot, etc. spread to the navel. Due to infection, white, yellow, brown or blood-like fluid comes out from the navel which also gives a strange smell. Because of this, along with fungal infections in the navel, many other bacterial infections occur. Due to which problems like itching, burning, and pain in the navel while passing urine occurs.

Doctors diagnose this condition on the basis of the patient's symptoms and physical examination. The best way to avoid infection in the navel and the discharge of the navel due to it is to take care of it. Navel infections are treated with antibiotics, antifungal creams or corticosteroid creams, etc. However, in some severe cases, surgery may also be required.

Symptoms of the infection in the Navel

Following are the most common symptoms that people feel when they have an infection in the navel:

  • Persistent itching or tingling in the navel.
  • Light green, yellow or brown coloured pus coming out of the navel.
  • Bad smell from the discharge (pus or fluid) coming out of the navel.
  • Bleeding from the navel
  • Pain, swelling and redness in and around the navel.
  • Overheating of the skin.
  • Vomiting and dizziness (this symptom is felt only in severe cases)

Causes of infection in the Navel

Constant touching-

Touching the navel repeatedly also increases the risk of infection because our hands are not always clean. This repeatedly touching the navel increases the risk of bacteria or fungus accumulating in the navel. Due to the moist and warm environment in the navel, microorganisms develop rapidly and spread the infection.

Lack of cleanliness-

Poor hygiene is the main cause of infection in the navel. Microorganisms easily start accumulating in the navel by not bathing daily due to which infection occurs in the navel. Apart from this, bathing with unclean water also increases the risk of infection in the navel. However, the most important thing is that not cleaning the navel while bathing and not removing the soap and water stored inside the navel after bathing helps the microorganisms to grow.

Bacterial infection-

The navel is known to be home to a variety of bacteria. If you do not clean that area properly, then bacteria can cause infection in the navel. Due to bacterial infection, green or yellowish smelly discharge starts coming out of the navel. In this condition, there is swelling and pain and a crust forms around the navel.

Yeast infection-

Candidiasis is a type of yeast infection that is caused by a type of yeast named Candida. It is a yeast that develops in moist and dark parts of the body (where there is no exposure to sunlight and air). It occurs in the folds of the skin (skin on the skin) like in the groin and under your arms. Yeast can also accumulate in your navel especially if you do not clean your navel properly. This causes a red and itchy rash to form in the navel and a thick white discharge starts coming out.

Diabetes-

People who have diabetes are more likely to get an infection of the navel. This is because yeast eats the sugar and due to diabetes, the amount of sugar in the blood increases.

Surgery-

If a person has had any surgery recently. For example, with hernia surgery etc., pus starts flowing from the navel. If this happens, contact a doctor immediately because it can be a sign of a serious infection that needs to be treated.

Urachal cyst-

When the baby is growing in its mother's womb, its bladder is connected to the umbilical cord through a thin tube called urachus. In this way, urine is expelled from the body of the baby during its stay in the womb. The urachus duct usually closes before birth but sometimes it does not close completely and remains slightly open.

Sebaceous cyst-

It is a type of lump which can develop in the navel as well as in many other parts of the body. It develops from an oil-releasing gland. It is called sebaceous glands. In this, there are black pimples in the centre of the cyst. If this cyst is infected, a yellowish-coloured, foul-smelling fluid oozes from it. The cyst may also swell and become red in colour.

Preventive measures of infection in the Navel

  • Wash the navel daily even while taking a bath with soap with soft fingers. For this, use a soap that helps fight bacteria.
  • After washing the navel, do not leave it wet, that is, wipe it well with a towel and dry it. Leaving it wet can aggravate the infection.
  • Try to keep the navel dry with talcum powder throughout the day.
  • Change sports clothes regularly. By doing this, sweating will not be there & the navel will remain dry.
  • When exercising, wear clothes that allow your skin to breathe and absorb sweat.

When does the risk of infection in the Navel increase?

There are certain types of factors that increase the risk of infection in the navel, such as-

  • Abdominal surgery or pregnancy.
  • Any wound or injury around the navel.
  • certain types of clothing.

Checking for infection in the navel-

The following blood tests are done to detect signs of infection from a sample of blood:

  • Total leukocyte count.
  • Differential leukocyte count.
  • ESR test pus culture and sensitivity (taking a sample of discharge from the navel).
  • Sometimes doctors take a piece of infected cell from the pus or navel as a sample and send it to the lab for testing. The doctor doing the test examines a sample of pus or cells with the help of a microscope and determines whether the person has an infection.

Home remedies for Navel infection

Turmeric-

Turmeric is considered to be the best antioxidant antibacterial element because many types of antibodies present in it protect the body from infection. Also, it helps to get rid of them even after infection. Make a paste of turmeric and apply it to the infected area.

Neem tree-

Turmeric powder with neem is very beneficial. For this reason, while making turmeric paste, crush some neem leaves in that paste and apply it to the place of infection.

Tea tree oil-

Tea tree oil is one of the most popular remedies for treating infections in the navel. Coconut oil mixed with tea tree oil is also applied to the affected area several times a day.

Coconut oil-

Antifungal and antimicrobial elements are found in coconut oil. It kills the bacteria causing the infection and slows down the growth of the fungus. Apart from this, coconut oil also reduces the redness, pain and heat of the skin associated with the infection of the navel.

Aloe vera-

When to go to the doctor?

If there is discharge from your navel, then see the doctor because it can be a sign of a serious infection. Apart from this, contact the doctor immediately in the following symptoms of infection in the navel-

  • Aloe vera juice helps to get rid of this fungal infection. Also, washing the fungal infection with warm salt water once or twice a day is very beneficial.
  • After bathing the skin of the navel, wipe it well with a towel and always keep the navel clean and dry.
  • Use an antifungal cream or powder to remove the infection. Apart from this, if there is more infection, start bathing with an antifungal shampoo.
  • The fungal infection mostly occurs in the navel. In this case, reduce the intake of sweet and oily foods.
    • In case of high fever.
    • When there is redness on the skin.
    • Tenderness (pain when touched) in the abdomen.
    • Pain while urinating.

What is Endocarditis? Know its Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Endocarditis is a problem related to the heart which is caused by an infection in the heart in which there is swelling in the inner layer of the heart. This inner layer of the heart is called the endocardium. When bacteria, fungi or other germs get infected from any other part of the body in this layer, this condition is called endocarditis. Apart from this, these infections also spread through oral activities and the bloodstream which affect the heart.

Usually, the endocardium includes the valves of the heart. In addition, it includes the interventricular septum, the mural endocardium, chordae tendineae and the surfaces of intracardiac devices. The lesions of endocarditis are known as vegetations which is a part of fibrin, platelets, microcolonialism of microorganisms and inflammatory cells.

Symptoms of Endocarditis

Some common symptoms of endocarditis or heart infection are seen are as follows-

  • Flu-like chills and fever.
  • Persistent cough.
  • Distinctive (altered) sound from the heart due to increased blood flow.
  • Feeling more weak and tired.
  • Severe pain in joints and muscles.
  • Night sweats while sleeping.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest pain while breathing.
  • Swelling in abdomen and legs.

Apart from this, some unusual symptoms of endocarditis are also seen which are as follows-

  • Rapid weight loss without any reason.
  • Blood in the urine.
  • Spleen tenderness due to infection.
  • Red rash on the palms and soles of the feet.
  • Red and soft bumps on the skin of the toes.
  • Petechiae i.e, red or purple patches on the skin, mouth, and eyes.

Causes of Endocarditis

The main causes of endocarditis are bacteria and germs reaching the inner lining of the heart (endocardium). When these germs enter the blood vessels, they spread through the blood to the heart or other parts of the body. After that these germs start to damage the valve or tissue of the heart. Apart from this, fungi or microorganisms are responsible for causing endocarditis. Let us know by which means these germs enter the body-

  • If you do not clean your mouth regularly.
  • When the blood coming out of the gums goes to the inner tissue of the heart.
  • When using a tattooing needle.
  • Taking illicit drugs, narcotic drugs such as heroin, cocaine through infectious needles.
  • When the gums are cut due to some dental procedure.

Risk factors for getting Endocarditis

Artificial heart valve-

People with artificial valves are more prone to spreading germs than normal heart valves.

Congenital heart defect-

People who have had a heart-related disease since birth may be more susceptible to infection.

Have ever had endocarditis before-

If a person has had endocarditis in the past, then they are more likely to get a heart-related infection because once the person has endocarditis, the heart tissue of the person has been damaged. Therefore, it can also be a risk factor for having endocarditis.

Rheumatic fever-

Having rheumatic fever causes damage to the heart valves. This increases the risk of developing endocarditis.

Prevention methods of Endocarditis

  • Pay special attention to the health of your teeth.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating.
  • Clean the teeth and gums thoroughly with the help of floss and consult a dentist regularly.
  • Avoid piercing, tattooing, and other types of skin-infecting procedures.
  • In case of any type of skin infection and the wound is not healing, contact the doctor immediately.

Tests for Endocarditis

Blood culture-

To check for endocarditis, doctors recommend a blood culture test. Through this test, bacteria and fungi are detected. Apart from this, anaemia etc. is also detected through a blood test.

Echocardiogram test-

Echocardiogram test is used for endocarditis. Through this test, pictures of the heart are taken through sound waves through which is known about the infection in the tissue of the heart.

Electrocardiogram-

When the report from the echocardiogram is not clear, in this situation the doctor requests the patient to undergo an electrocardiogram test. In this test, the doctor checks the patient's heartbeat.

X-ray-

Doctors do chest X-rays to know the condition of the lungs and heart through which the enlarged size of the heart and infection in the lungs are detected.

CT scan or MRI-

The doctor may also prescribe a CT scan or MRI test if there is a serious problem of endocarditis. By this, apart from the heart, the spread of infection to other parts of the body is also detected.

Complex problems associated with endocarditis

Stroke and damage to limbs-

In endocarditis, cell fragments and clumps of bacteria form at the site of infection. When these bacteria break down and disperse, in this condition they reach the stomach, kidney, brain and various parts of the body through the blood causing stroke or damage to other tissues or organs. Along with this, various physical and mental problems start arising.

Infection in muscles or other parts-

Endocarditis forms abscessed pus in other parts of the body including the kidney, brain, liver, spleen due to which an abscess can also form in the heart muscle. As a result, the heartbeat may be abnormal. In this case, surgery may also be required to treat severe abscesses.

Heart failure-

If not treated in time, endocarditis damages the heart valves. If left untreated, this infection can permanently destroy the inner lining. This makes it difficult for the valve to pump blood. As a result, the risk of heart failure increases.

What is Gallstone? Know its Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies

The gallbladder is an important organ to store the enzymes needed for digestion. The main problem associated with the gallbladder is that it is prone to stone formation. When the amount of fluid in the gallbladder begins to dry up, the sugar-salt and other micronutrient elements present in it accumulate together and take the form of small stone pieces which are called gallstones. 80% of stones are made up of cholesterol which gradually hardens and takes the form of a stone inside the gall bladder. Cholesterol stones are yellow-green.

Types of Gallstones

The following are the types of stones that form in the gallbladder.

Cholesterol gallstones-

This is the most common type of gallstone which is called cholesterol gallstones. It is often yellow. These stones are mainly made up of undissolved cholesterol but sometimes they also contain other substances.

Pigment gallstones-

This stone is dark brown or black. It is formed when an excessive amount of bilirubin is included in the bile. Bilirubin is a fluid that is made by the liver and stored by the gall bladder.

Symptoms of Gallstones

Most people with gallstones do not have any symptoms. They may not even know it until they feel any symptoms. It is also called 'silent gallstones'. As the complications of gallstones progress, so do its symptoms. The most common symptom is a pain in the upper abdomen because it usually comes in episodes. It is also often referred to as an 'attack'. It can take days, weeks, months and even years between attacks of pain. Its pain usually starts 30 minutes after eating a fatty meal. Its pain can generally be severe, dull and constant. The flare can last up to 5 hours. Waves of its pain can go up to the right shoulder and back. This unbearable pain often occurs only during the night.

Some other common symptoms of gallstones are-

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • A negative reaction of the body to fatty foods.
  • Causes of Gallstones

The cause of gallstones is not yet established and it can occur at any age but there are some factors, which can increase the chances of gallstones such as-

  • Post-bariatric surgery.
  • Taking certain medicines.
  • Due to prolonged illness.
  • Diagnosis & Treatment of Gallstones

Ultrasound test-

In this test sound waves are used to take pictures of the internal parts of the patient's body. Gallstones are well visible in these types of tests.

MRI scan-

With the help of this test, pictures of some internal parts of the body are also extracted. This includes the pancreas and bile ducts.

Endoscopic ultrasound scan-

This test is done with an instrument called an endoscope. This device is thin, flexible, tube-like and looks like a telescopic camera. This device is inserted through the mouth into the stomach. Very small stones can also be seen by this.

CT scan-

This test provides complete pictures of the bile ducts, liver, and pancreas.

Home remedies for Gallstones

Apple juice-

Apple juice is consumed as a home remedy for gallstones. If this juice is consumed regularly, then gallstones are removed through the stool because by consuming apple juice, the gallstones become soft and are easily removed through the stool. At the moment, there is no exact concrete evidence in this regard yet but its consumption is considered beneficial.

Lemon juice-

The use of lemon water cures gallstones. According to scientific research in this regard, lemon is a kind of citrus fruit. Its use promotes the ability to expel the stones present in the gall bladder. Apart from this, vitamin C prevents the problem of stones from growing and lemon is considered a good source of vitamin C. Therefore, lemon juice is proven to help get rid of gallstones.

Dandelion-

Dandelion root is used as an effective home remedy for gallstones. According to research published on the website of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), dandelion contains taraxacum and taraxacerin which help treat gall bladder problems. Dandelion root not only improves digestion power but is also used to treat gallstones.

Pear juice-

Drinking pear juice is very beneficial in gallstones because it has anti-inflammatory properties which is an effective way to remove inflammation due to which also prevents the formation of gallstones.

Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies for Dysentery

Dysentery is a type of stomach related disease which is mainly caused by dirt. When a person eats or drinks something with dirty hands, the bacteria reach the intestines of the stomach through the hands due to which the problem of dysentery arises. Therefore, one should take special care of cleanliness. When dysentery occurs, the patient starts having loose motions. Sometimes a few drops of blood or mucus appear along with the diarrhoea that leads to physical weakness. This problem is common in young children but can happen in people of all ages. Therefore, it can prove to be a serious problem if it is not treated in time.

The severe form of diarrhoea is called dysentery which is a kind of intestinal disorder. In this, the person's stool comes out like water. Apart from this, blood or mucus also comes with the stool. Usually, this diarrhoea lasts for a week. In some cases, patients recover quickly but in other cases, the patients are not able to recover quickly. Dysentery is mainly caused by bacterial infection. It can also be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. Apart from this, dysentery is also caused by infection with micro-organisms, certain drugs and other diseases.

Types and Causes of Dysentery

(Acute)-

(Chronic)-

What are Haemorrhoids? Know its Types, Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies

Due to the hustle and bustle of life, often all of us are unable to pay attention to our health and food items due to which many diseases start arising in the body. Haemorrhoids are also one of those diseases. Haemorrhoid is a disease that is very painful. In this condition, there is swelling in the lower part of the rectum and inside the anus due to which warts start forming inside the anus or on the initial parts of the rectum. These warts sometimes stay inside, sometimes they come out. Usually, 60 to 70 per cent of the people have to go through the problem of piles at some stage of their age. If it is not treated in time, the pain can increase.

What is Haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are a type of inflammation, which occurs in the anus and lower part (rectum) inside the kidney and lower rectum there is a network of small blood vessels (veins). Sometimes these veins become more dilated and fill with more blood than normal. Then these nerves and the tissues above cause inflammation called piles. Haemorrhoids are very common in some people and develop heavy bleeding in some people. The most common symptom is bleeding when going to the toilet but larger haemorrhoids can cause mucus leakage, pain, burning and itching when going to the toilet.

Types of Haemorrhoids

There are two types of piles. First internal haemorrhoids and second external piles. Let us know in detail about these types-

Internal Haemorrhoids-

The most common hallmark of internal haemorrhoids is bleeding during bowel movements that is why it is also known as bleeding haemorrhoids. This problem occurs at the beginning of the rectum and inside the anus. In this, there are warts inside the anus. When the tissue (wart) here gets bigger, it can come out, which is called a prolapse. In this, while passing stool, blood drips a little along with the stool or starts coming in the form of the atomizer. Warts go inside on their own after defecation but in severe condition, it does not go inside even after pressing it with hand. Therefore, without ignoring, this type of piles should be treated immediately.

External Hemorrhoids-

This type of piles occurs outside the anus. There is no bleeding in its warts and these warts can be easily seen outside. The affected person feels itching and burning in the affected areas. In common parlance, it is also known as bad piles. It doesn't give much trouble in the initial stage but due to wrong eating habits and constipation, these warts swell. Also, blood clots form in these warts and there is swelling due to which the person has to face unbearable pain. In this type of piles, there is also difficulty in cleaning the affected areas after having a bowel movement.

Symptoms of Haemorrhoids

  • Bleeding from the rectum.
  • Hard and thick stools.
  • Feeling difficulty while passing bowel movements.
  • Excessive straining while passing bowel movements.

  • Frequent urge to pass stool but not passing stool during defecation.
  • Formation of one or more hard lumps around the anus.

Causes and Risk factors of Haemorrhoids

Piles are known as Arsha in Ayurveda. It is believed that piles are caused by the contamination of the three doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha, hence it is also known as Tridoshaja disease. According to Ayurveda, piles in which Vata or Kapha predominate, it is called dry Arsha. There is no bleeding in this type of piles but it causes more pain. On the contrary, the Arsha in which blood and bile predominate is called Ardra Arsha. Bleeding occurs in this type of piles. Apart from this, there are some other reasons behind the occurrence of piles such as-

  • Genetics and ageing.
  • Sitting for a long time, especially in the toilet.
  • Weakening of the tissues of the anus or rectum.
  • Standing and working for several hours.

This usually leads to increased sleepiness, lethargy and a general feeling of being mentally and physically ill all the time. Changes in mood, irritability and anxiety are common symptoms. Problems caused by insomnia range from lack of good sleep to problems associated with decreased sleep duration.

Insomnia can affect a person of any age. It is more common in adult women than in adult men. Sleep disorders impair learning and work performance. It also causes obesity, anxiety, depression, irritability, concentration problems, memory problems, weakened immune system function and reduced reaction time.

Types of Insomnia

Insomnia is generally divided into three types-

Temporary Insomnia-

This is when symptoms last for three nights.

Acute Insomnia-

It is also called short-term insomnia. Its symptoms can last from one night to several weeks.

Chronic Insomnia-

This problem usually lasts for months and sometimes years. According to the National Institutes of Health, most cases of chronic insomnia are side effects resulting from another primary problem.

Symptoms of Insomnia

  • Staying up till late at night.
  • Feeling tired due to lack of sleep.
  • Staying up for long in bed before going to sleep.
  • Try different ways to fall asleep.
  • Waking up early after sleeping late.
  • Inferior concentration and decreased ability to concentrate.

Travel or work schedule-

A person's circadian rhythm acts as an internal clock that guides his sleep-wake cycle, metabolism and body temperature. Insomnia can be caused by the disturbance of the body's circadian rhythm. Reasons for this include air travel in different time zones, working early or in late shifts, or changing shifts frequently.

Bad sleeping habits-

Bad sleeping habits include irregular sleeping times, daytime sleepiness, stimulating activities before bedtime, lack of proper sleeping environment and eating or watching TV while sitting in your bed. Computers, TV, video games, smartphones before bed can interfere with the sleep cycle.

It is okay to have a light meal before bedtime but eating too much can make you feel physically uncomfortable while sleeping. Many people experience chest pain from this. Acid and food backflow from the stomach towards the oesophagus due to which there may be a problem of insomnia.

Mental health disorders-

Anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder can disrupt sleep. Waking up too early can be a sign of depression. Insomnia often occurs along with other mental health disorders.

Medicines-

Many prescription medications interfere with sleep, such as asthma medication, high BP medication, or antidepressant medication. Many over-the-counter medicines including pain killers, allergy and cold medicines, and weight loss products contain caffeine and other stimulants which interfere with sleep.

Medical conditions-

Examples of conditions associated with insomnia include chronic pain, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), overactive thyroid, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Sleep disorders-

Sleep apnea disrupts breathing from time to time during the night due to which the person cannot sleep. Restless legs syndrome creates a strange sensation in the legs and the person is forced to move his legs repeatedly without wanting to. In this condition, he cannot sleep.

Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol-

Coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated drinks contain stimulants. Drinking them after noon time or in the evening disrupts sleep. Nicotine is another stimulant in tobacco products that interferes with sleep. Alcohol can help with sleep but it prevents deep sleep and the person often wakes up in the middle of the night.

Consuming mint tea is beneficial in reducing stress, one of the symptoms of insomnia. It also helps in getting good sleep. In addition to mint tea, peppermint oil can also be used in aromatherapy. Therefore, the use of mint tea or peppermint oil at any time throughout the day or before sleeping is effective for insomnia.

Lavender oil for insomnia-

The use of lavender oil as a home remedy for insomnia is also beneficial. A study on female students in Korea showed that aromatherapy with lavender oil reduced insomnia. Apart from this, aromatherapy is also helpful in getting good sleep in post-delivery women. Therefore, lavender oil is used to improve the quality of sleep in patients suffering from insomnia.

Kiwi-

The benefits of kiwi fruit include good sleep. Kiwi fruit is rich in antioxidant properties. For this reason, this fruit is useful in improving the quality of sleep. Along with this, serotonin (serotonin - a type of chemical) is present in it which is useful for good sleep. Kiwi fruit is also counted among sleep-promoting fruits. Therefore, consuming kiwi fruit an hour before sleeping can bring some relief to the problem of insomnia.

This particular tea is consumed to treat sleep disorders. Apart from this, another research also shows the sleep-promoting properties of chamomile on the basis of which it is considered beneficial in insomnia.

Honey and milk-

The benefits of honey and milk are there for health, but if these two are mixed, then their quality increases further. The use of honey and milk is helpful for good sleep. A study published on the website of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) confirms this. In this research, patients with heart disease were given honey and milk after which the quality of their sleep improved to a great extent. According to this study, it has been proved that the consumption of honey and milk is useful in insomnia.

Green tea-

Green tea is also consumed for a good sleep. This is an effective home remedy to get rid of the problem of sleeplessness. Green tea is rich in the special amino acid L-theanine which works to promote sleep. However, keep in mind that only low-caffeinated green tea should be consumed.

Nail fungal Infection is a nail disease that is caused due to infection in the fingers and thumbs of the hands. This type of fungal infection is seen in the nails which is known as onychomycosis in medical language. In addition to the fingernails, this infection can also occur in the toenails due to which the nails become colourless, black and thick. Along with this, the nails start cracking.

Nowadays, nail fungal infection has become a common problem. The main reason for this is dirt, pollution, non-cleanliness of nails, synthetic socks and sweating in the feet for a long time, etc. However, this problem is seen in people of all ages but more often this problem is seen in the elderly, ie people above 60 years of age. If it is not treated in time, it increases day by day. As a result, it can prove to be a serious problem.

Types of Nail Fungal Infection

There are generally four types of nail fungal infections. These are as follows-

Distal Subungual Onychomycosis-

This is a common type of nail fungal infection that infects the tip of a person's nail. This breaks the front part of the nail of the infected person. Also, there is swelling in the area around the nail. Apart from this, the subungual area i.e. the underside of the nail starts thickening.

White Superficial Onychomycosis-

In this type of nail fungal infection, the top layer of the nail is affected but sometimes it starts affecting the inner layer of the nail i.e. the cornified layer. Day by day this infection keeps spreading due to which the nails become rough, fragile and crooked.

Candida Infection-

Candida infection is a serious problem. Apart from affecting the nail, it also affects the skin attached to the nail. During this, the nails separate from the fingers. Generally, this infection is more common in women than in men. Apart from this, Candida nail fungal infection is mostly found in the middle finger.

Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis-

This type of nail fungal infection is mostly seen in people who are already infected with HIV or some serious disease. Proximal subungual onychomycosis infection affects the root of the nail. In addition, proximal subungual onychomycosis can also affect the skin of the feet.

Causes of Nail fungal Infection

There are many types of fungi present in the surrounding environment. They are like microbes. These fungi grow continuously in places like air, water, soil etc. and grow continuously due to the effect of the environment whereas fungi also live in the human body which remains in the body without harming it. Some fungi are also harmful to the body. When these harmful fungi attack the body, it is difficult to eliminate them because they are able to survive in any kind of environment. These harmful fungi enter the nail through small cracks present in the nail or the skin around it that cause infection. Apart from this, there are some other causes of nail disease as well. Let's take a look at these reasons-

  • Nail injury.
  • Having nail surgery.
  • Suffering from diabetes.
  • Weakening of the immune system.
  • Wearing tight shoes.
  • Taking a long bath in the swimming pool.
  • Walking barefoot in public places.
  • Living in places with constant humidity.

Symptoms of Nail Fungal Infection

Treatment of Nail Fungal Infection

Oral antifungal drugs-

In the traditional treatment of nail fungal infection, doctors recommend taking oral antifungal drugs in which many types of antifungal creams and some oral medicines are included. These medicines eliminate the infection rapidly. It takes at least 3-4 months to get rid of the infection completely through oral antifungal drugs.

Medicated nail polish-

Doctors recommend using a medicated nail polish to treat nail fungal infection which is called ciclopirox. Using it once a day on the infected nails and the skin around it helps to get rid of the infection.

Medicated nail cream-

Apart from medicated nail polish, doctors also suggest antifungal creams.

Surgery-

When the infection becomes severe and painful, doctors recommend surgery wherein, the nail is temporarily removed.

Why does Vaginal Yeast Infection happen? Know its Causes, Symptoms and Home remedies

It is normal to have a little yeast in the vagina, but sometimes this balance is disturbed and the amount of yeast increases in the vagina. This infection can occur due to changes in hormones, vaginal douching, uncontrolled diabetes, excessive antibiotics, weakened immune system and wearing tight, wet clothes. Yeast infection in the vagina is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. This condition causes itching and burning in the vagina.

Yeast infections are common in pregnant women because hormones during pregnancy affect the balance of naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina. Candida occurs naturally in the vagina which usually doesn't cause a problem because other natural bacteria control it. During pregnancy, an element called glycogen increases in the vagina. It promotes the rapid growth of Candida, which leads to yeast infection. Yeast infection during pregnancy does not cause any problems for the baby but if it is left untreated, the infection can reach the baby while passing through the genital tract during natural delivery. Vaginal yeast infection is more common in women than in men. 3 out of 4 women will experience a yeast infection once in their lifetime.

Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infection

  • Itching, burning or discomfort in the vagina.
  • Pain in the vagina or vaginal tract.
  • Burning sensation during sexual intercourse or urination.
  • White and thick vaginal discharge.
  • Red rash.
  • Sometimes the infection becomes so complicated that it causes sores in the skin.

Causes of Vaginal Yeast Infection

Pregnancy:

The increased level of estrogen causes yeast infection in women during pregnancy.

Menstruation:

Changes in hormone levels during a normal menstrual cycle affect the health of the vagina which sometimes leads to yeast infections. It can also be due to not changing the pads or not keeping cleanliness for a long time during menstruation.

Increased level of estrogen:

Women who take birth control pills have higher than normal levels of estrogen which increases the chances of yeast infection.

Sugar:

Having any type of diabetes increases the chances of getting a yeast infection.

Antibiotics:

Consumption of antibiotics (drugs) in excessive amounts destroys the bacteria that maintain health, Lactobacillus acidophilus due to which an increase in the yeast leads to infection.

Weak immune system:

Women whose immune system is weakened due to corticosteroid therapy or HIV infection. Yeast infection spreads rapidly in them too.

Prevention methods of Vaginal Yeast Infection

  • Avoid douching-This is a method of rinsing the vagina, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. It comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube for vaginal cleansing.
  • Avoid using deodorant or deodorant pads in the vagina.
  • Use cotton undergarments.
  • Wear loose-fitting pants or skirts.
  • Wash the undergarments with warm water.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Change wet clothes (swimming suit) immediately.
  • Avoid taking a bath in the bathtub.
  • Vaginal yeast infection treatment.

Less complicated yeast infection

It is treated in two ways. First, vaginal therapy and secondly through the use of medicines. Follow both these methods only on the advice of the doctor, that is, before taking any kind of medicine, you must consult a doctor because these drugs can also react which can have dire consequences.

Complicated yeast infection

Complicated yeast infections are also treated with vaginal therapy and oral medications. In this, vaginal therapy is given for a long time. (approximately 7 to 14 days) which involves the use of vaginal creams and regular use of medicines.

Home remedies for Vaginal yeast infection

Coconut oil

Coconut oil has antifungal properties which provide relief in vaginal infection. It is beneficial to apply good organic coconut oil on the private part both externally and internally. It stops the infection from progressing by giving relief in itching and pain.

Garlic

Eating garlic provides relief in yeast infection because garlic has antifungal and antibiotic properties which work to relieve any kind of infection on the skin. Not only this, garlic is present in many vaginal creams which gives relief in redness and pain.

Curd

Good bacteria (probiotics) are found in curd which prevents the spread of yeast or bad bacteria in the body that is why it is beneficial to eat curd to get relief in yeast infection and it can also be applied on the outer layer of the vagina. Just keep in mind that the curd should be plain, without any flavor and sugar of any kind.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is the most popular remedy to get rid of yeast infection. It is better to drink it instead of applying it directly around the vagina. To get relief from yeast infection, drink two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar twice or thrice a day.

Tea tree oil

The antifungal properties present in this oil kills the yeast from the root. This has also been proved in many types of research but instead of applying it directly, mix it in vegetable oil or coconut oil and apply it. If applying it causes itching or burning, then avoid it.

When to go to the doctor?

Not all women feel the symptoms of a yeast infection because the symptoms are also very subtle when the infection is working but if you experience any of the following symptoms, go to the doctor immediately-

  • Feeling of itching and pain in or around the vagina.
  • When the area around the vagina turns red.
  • Having trouble during intercourse.
  • Feeling of prickling sensation while passing urine.
  • Having a foul-smelling discharge.

(Acute diarrhoea)-

(Persistent diarrhoea)-

(Acute Bloody diarrhoea)-

(Chronic diarrhoea)-

वैसे डायरिया होने के कई लक्षण होते हैं। लेकिन इनके कारणों के आधार पर यह एक या इससे अधिक लक्षण देखने को मिल सकते हैं। आइए जानतें हैं इन्हीं लक्षणों के बारे में;

(Intestinal Infection)-

(Stomach Ulcer)-

(Inflammatory Bowel Disease)-

Cholestasis- A disease of the Liver

Cholestasis is a disease of the liver wherein the flow of bile is obstructed or slow down which further leads to many problems in the functioning of the body such as trouble in the absorption of nutrients. Bile is a liquid produced by the liver which helps in the absorption of fat from the food. It also helps in getting rid of bilirubin, an orangish-yellow pigment that is produced on the breakdown of Red Blood Cells (RBCs).

When Cholestasis occurs, the functioning of the liver alters which may lead to the production of more bilirubin which makes your skin look yellowish along with itching. This condition is not gender-specific or age-specific and can happen to anyone. However rare, it also happens among newborns as well.

Types of Cholestasis

Cholestasis is of two types-

Intrahepatic cholestasis

Intrahepatic cholestasis is a type that originates within the liver and can be caused by a disease, infection, excessive drug use, genetic abnormalities, and hormonal effects on bile flow. Apart from this, pregnancy can also increase the risk for Intrahepatic cholestasis.

Extrahepatic cholestasis

Extrahepatic cholestasis is a type of Cholestasis that occurs outside the liver and is caused by physical obstruction or blockage in the bile ducts. These blockages may result from conditions like gallstones, cysts, and tumours that restrict the flow of bile. Apart from this, Pancreatitis (Inflammation of the pancreas) can also slow down the bile flow.

Symptoms of Cholestasis

The symptoms of both types of cholestasis are the same. However, these symptoms are not seen in everyone with cholestasis. Adults having chronic cholestasis often do not show symptoms and are usually symptom-free. The symptoms are-

  • Jaundice (a disease in which the skin and the white of the eyes turns yellow)
  • Dark urine
  • Light-coloured and smelly stool
  • Swollen or extended abdomen
  • Slow weight gain
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Excessive itching

Some rare symptoms may include-

  • Stomach pain
  • Muddy skin colour
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Tiredness

Causes of Cholestasis

The main cause of Cholestasis is the blockage of bile which can be caused by a number of factors. These factors are listed below-

Medicines-

The liver plays an important role in the metabolism of medicines. There are certain antibiotics, anabolic steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, oral contraceptives, antiepileptic drugs, antifungal, antipsychotic, and antimicrobial drugs that are more difficult for the liver to metabolize and may prove to be toxic to the liver.

Diseases

  • Certain diseases can cause inflammation of the bile ducts, leading to cholestasis. These include viral infections such as HIV, hepatitis, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr.
  • Bacterial infections can also lead to Cholestasis.
  • There are certain autoimmune diseases that cause the immune system to attack and damage the bile ducts.
  • Genetic disorders, such as sickle cell disease may also cause Cholestasis.
  • Liver and pancreatic cancer, as well as lymphomas, are also possible causes of Cholestasis.

Diagnosis and Screening process of Cholestasis

The diagnosis of Cholestasis can be done through a physical examination, blood tests, imaging tests or a liver biopsy.

Physical Checkup-

This is done to check if there is-

  • Broken blood vessels under the skin.
  • A swollen spleen or gallbladder.
  • Pain or fluid in the belly.
  • Right upper abdominal pain that sometimes extends to the right shoulder.

Blood tests-

A blood test is basically done to check the functioning and efficiency of the liver. In the case of Cholestasis, there are two enzymes that are usually high. These are-

  • Alkaline phosphatase
  • Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase

Another blood test can be done to measure the bilirubin that can indicate the stage of cholestasis. However, blood tests cannot identify the cause of cholestasis.

Imaging tests-

Imaging tests are done to scan the organs that can help find a blockage or tumour. These tests may be-

  • An ultrasound
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan,
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

All these use sound frequencies, X-rays, or radio waves to get images of the organs. In the case of a blocked bile duct, there may be some other tests that need more detailed imaging tests.

Liver biopsy-

In this, a sample of liver tissue is collected to check the health of the liver.

Treatment of Cholestasis

The treatment of this disease depends on the cause of cholestasis-

  • In the case of disease, the underlying cause is treated to get rid of Cholestasis.
  • If there is a blockage in the bile duct due to problems like gallstones or a tumour, the doctor may remove it using a surgical procedure.
  • Sometimes the blockage is also removed without surgery.

Ways to Prevent Cholestasis

Certain ways to prevent or reduce the risk of Cholestasis are-

  • Stop the consumption of alcohol.
  • Quit certain drugs.
  • Take calcium, vitamin D, or vitamin K in optimum amounts.
  • Take medications to lower bilirubin.
  • Consume a good, healthy, and balanced diet.

Home Remedies for Cholestasis

Guar Gum-

Guar gum is a fibre obtained from the seed of the guar. It helps to stabilize the liver which proves to be useful in relieving the symptoms of cholestasis.

Activated Charcoal-

Several studies conducted on the role of activated charcoal in Cholestasis show that activated charcoal may be considered a good option for the treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. It acts as a natural treatment to trap toxins and chemicals in the body and flushing them out before absorption by the body.  Activated charcoal carries a negative electric charge that attracts positively charged toxins.

Milk Thistle-

Milk thistle, a natural herb is commonly used as a detoxifier, especially for the liver. It helps to promote healthy digestive function by increasing the production of bile juice and reducing inflammation. Studies reveal that milk thistle is used and effective in curing various liver diseases which includes cholestasis.

Dandelion Root-

Dandelion root and its tea are natural remedies that are safe for cholestasis of pregnancy. It is a proven remedy to strengthen the liver. Dandelion roots are rich in vitamins and nutrients which acts as a detoxifier for the liver and keep it working properly. Dandelion also supports the digestive system by maintaining the flow of bile, promoting the absorption of minerals.

Symptoms of appendicitis are less visible in the early stages but if it is not treated in time or is ignored, this problem can get serious. Sometimes this problem becomes so complicated that it even proves to be fatal.

What is Appendicitis?

The risk of appendicitis is generally higher in people between the ages of 10 and 40. It is common in men than in women. Appendicitis is a bowel problem that is caused due to inflammation or infection in the appendix. The appendix is the link between the small and large intestines which is a kind of bag shaped like Mulberry fruit. This link keeps coming out from the intestines. It is located in the lower right part of the abdomen. The problem of appendicitis occurs due to any kind of blockage in the appendix and bacteria start growing inside it which also cause stomach pain.

Types of appendicitis

There are mainly two types of appendicitis which are the following-

Acute Appendicitis-

Acute appendicitis is a serious problem, the symptoms of which start suddenly and tend to increase over time. These symptoms start appearing within a day or two. Therefore, acute appendicitis needs to be treated immediately. This problem takes a serious form if it is not treated in time or is ignored.

Chronic appendicitis-

The problem of chronic appendicitis is much less and more serious than that of acute appendicitis. Its swelling lasts for a long time. Sometimes it becomes very difficult to identify due to which this appendicitis becomes very difficult to treat. This type of appendicitis can prove fatal.

Symptoms of Appendicitis

Usually, the initial symptoms of appendicitis include mild pain in the lower abdomen, loss of appetite, etc. but as soon as this problem starts increasing, the stomach pain becomes the main symptom. Apart from this, there are some other symptoms as well. These are-

  • Sharp pain in the right side around the navel or in the lower abdomen.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting or nausea.
  • Swelling in the abdomen.
  • Feeling trouble urinating.
  • Severe cramping in the stomach.
  • Mild fever.
  • Constipation or diarrhoea with gas.
  • Feeling difficulty while passing bowel movements.
  • White coating on the upper surface of the tongue.

Causes of Appendicitis

There can be many reasons for having appendicitis. According to experts, appendicitis develops when the passage or opening of the appendix is blocked. This blockage is caused by the build-up of a thick mucus-like fluid inside the appendix. Apart from this, many things like hard stools, enlarged lymphoid follicles, deep wounds, etc., entering the appendix from the cecum are also a few of the reasons. This fluid or stool hardens and becomes strong like a stone which blocks the opening of the appendix. This stone-like thing is called Fecalith. When the opening of the appendix gets blocked, bacteria start to grow inside it due to which pus and swelling start to increase. As a result, there is pain in the stomach. If its symptoms are not recognized in time, then the swelling of the appendix keeps on increasing and the appendix can also burst. As a result, the infection by the bacteria spreads throughout the stomach which can prove to be serious or fatal.

Other causes of appendicitis-

  • Having problems with digestion.
  • On consuming unpasteurized food.
  • On consuming excessive flour or junk food.
  • Consuming more oily and spicy foods.
  • When the amount of fibre in the diet is low.

Prevention methods for Appendicitis

  • Drink plenty of fluids and water.
  • Do yoga and exercise regularly every day. By doing this, the digestive system of the body works smoothly.
  • Pay special attention to hand hygiene before eating.

  • Avoid alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid consumption of fried and junk food.
  • Chew the food properly while eating.
  • Do not drink water while eating.
  • Walk regularly in the morning.

Diagnosis & Treatment of Appendicitis

  • To check for appendicitis, doctors do an ultrasound or CT scan.
  • For its treatment, the pus present is taken out with the help of an injection.
  • Antibiotics are used for its treatment because appendicitis is usually caused by infection.
  • If there is severe pain in the position of the appendix, doctors recommend taking painkillers.
  • The problem of appendicitis can be reduced by including fibre and fluid rich foods in the diet.
  • In severe cases of appendicitis, surgery is used to remove it.
