Dry mouth due to thirst is common but frequent and persistent dryness of the mouth indicates some problem of the body. Generally, the scientific reason for dry mouth is the slowing down of saliva production in the mouth. The main reason for this is lack of water in the body, being hungry and lack of fluoride in the water, etc. All these symptoms point towards dry mouth. According to experts, almost every sixth person is facing this problem nowadays. Therefore, it should not be ignored as a common problem.

 

The problem of dry mouth is known as Xerostomia in the medical language. When the salivary glands in the mouth stop producing saliva, dry mouth occurs in this condition. This saliva produced in the mouth eliminates the acid made by the bacteria of the teeth due to which there are no insects in the teeth and saliva helps in easy chewing and swallowing of food. Therefore, if there is a problem of dry mouth, then the person also has difficulty in eating food.

 

Symptoms of dry mouth

  • Dryness in the mouth and throat.
  • Thickening of saliva.
  • Bad breath.
  • Difficulty in chewing and swallowing food.
  • Loss of taste or discoloration of food.
  • Lack of desire to eat.
  • Frequent worms in the teeth.
  • Itching of gums and related disorders.

Causes of Dry mouth

There are many reasons behind dry mouth. The main reasons for which are as follows-

 

Side effect of certain medicines-

When we are sick, doctors give us some medicines that help us to recover but at the same time, these medicines also have some side effects due to which the chances of having many physical problems like dry mouth increase. Apart from this, if you take some common medicines without consulting a doctor, then the problem of dry mouth is more than that. Medicines that cure allergies, depression, anxiety, medicines to cure nerve and muscle pain, etc. cause dry mouth.

 

Growing old-

One of the biggest causes of dry mouth is also ageing. This problem is mostly seen in the elderly as they use more medicines which can lead to dry mouth.

 

Damage to nerves-

Nerve damage is caused by injury or surgery to any part of a person's head or neck due to which the problem of dry mouth can arise.

 

Cancer therapy-

Chemotherapy drugs can change the type and amount of saliva produced. Apart from this, treatment with radiation causes damage to the salivary glands present in the neck and head due to which the amount of saliva is reduced.

 

Smoking and tobacco use-

The problem of dry mouth arises due to smoking and the consumption of tobacco.

 

Methamphetamine-

It is a kind of drug due to which the symptoms of dry mouth are seen. This state is also called meth mouth.

 

Other causes of dry mouth are-

  • If there is any kind of disturbance in the stomach.
  • Having an irregular routine. Waking up late at night or falling asleep for several days.
  • Injury to the nerves that produce saliva.
  • If there is any kind of infection and tumour in the body.
  • Having health problems such as autoimmune problems, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease.

Take These Precautions to avoid Dry mouth

  • Drink more fluids.
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  • Consume such fruits and vegetables in which water content is high like watermelon, cucumber, etc.
  • Minimize the consumption of tea and coffee.
  • Maintain oral health.
  • Brush your teeth thoroughly after meals.
  • Chew the food and drink a small amount of water in between.
  • Stay away from anxiety, stress and depression.
  • Do not smoke, use tobacco and drugs at all.
  • Walk daily in the morning and exercise regularly.

Home remedies for Dry mouth

Red chilli is beneficial in the treatment of dry mouth-

Cayenne pepper is a good home remedy for dry mouth. Therefore, it is beneficial to consume red chilli powder by adding it to soup or salad. Apart from this, apply red chili powder on the tongue through the finger. By doing this the tongue burns for some time but the salivary glands get activated.

 

Fennel is beneficial-

The consumption of fennel is good for dry mouth as flavonoids are found in fennel, which helps in the production of saliva. For this, boil a spoonful of fennel and sugar candy in a glass of water. Let it cool and drink it.

 

Lemon and honey are effective-

Lemon and honey are considered effective remedies in the treatment of dry mouth. For this, take a few drops of lemon juice and a spoonful of honey in a glass of water and mix it well. Now drink this mixture in small amounts throughout the day. By doing this, saliva is formed in the mouth and the mouth does not dry out.

 

Ginger is beneficial-

Ginger is beneficial for dry mouth. According to scientific research done on this, ginger is used to relieve the symptoms of xerostomia. It mainly contains Zingiber officinale, which stimulates the production of saliva. This reduces the problem of dry mouth to some extent. For this, chew a small piece of ginger in the mouth.

 

Cinnamon is effective-

Cinnamon has the ability to produce saliva. Therefore, using it gets rid of the problem of dryness of the mouth. For this, chew a piece of cinnamon by keeping it in your mouth.

 

Baking soda mixture is beneficial-

The use of baking soda is considered a good remedy in the treatment of dry mouth. For this, mix one-fourth teaspoon of baking soda, one teaspoon each of salt and sugar and a few drops of lemon juice in a glass of water and drink it.
